Terre Haute - A New Landscape of Radio

So here's what we know, or at least think we know.

WINH is flipping to News/Talk
-Billboards are reportedly up.
-What will be left of WPRS?

Crossroads is changing something
-Some think it's WBOW to country
-Rumors include The Crock in the switch
-Apparently Facebook has some insight; could be misdirection

Who knows what? Anything to add?

I think the TH market landscape won't change much. WTHI and WMGI still rule the roost. I can't see N/T doing much to break those market leaders.

Also, I know that something funky is going to happen with my television box tomorrow evening. Maybe it will finally stop flickering and the Betamax VCR will quit blinking 12:00.

Crossroads isn't going country! That would be really stupid. What could they do that 98.5 couldn't?
I hear that 95.9 is dropping "Classic Hits" and going to all 80's. Gee, didn't they try that before?
And when 98.5 goes N/T what happens to 1440 AM? Hopefully they will offer something other than N/T on AM. And what will Crossroads do with 102.7? My guess is nothing all that new. Good Luck to All!

Im sure its all rumours,,, but here is what ive heard.. I think most of it is bull,,, but I will tell ya what I heard just the same.

95.9-Changing to Rhythmic AC similar to Movin as Energy FM.......Didnt they also try this in the past???

102.7-Either mainstream AC, or straight ahead CHR to compete with Mix FM........104.3 cant even touch mix.
and the mainstream and soft AC have already tried and failed.

92.7 Crock-Going classic Country gold... Greatest Country hits from the 60s through the 90s?????? (Scratches head) if any of this happens Ill eat my hat... I dont think anything in T-Hut will change.

What could they do that 98.5 couldn't?
98.5 had an 8 or 9 share (12+) for exactly one book (and brought WTHI-FM under a 20 share). Crossroads might like to have that if they could :)

Clubber has heard some interesting rumors, most of which I hadn't heard. I heard that "95.9 to 80s" rumor and can't understand why they would return to that or rhythmic AC? I don't think WBOW will become an AC or CHR, although I really believe AC could work if done well, with the right people, who could stay the course. I don't think Crossroads has the resources for that, but I'd love to see it. Other than WTHI, the other stations in TH, including Mix and WBOW just mostly feel canned and filled with liner readers. Some personality with localism would be exciting. The Crock to Classic Country would be a stretch to me.

Someone needs to try 90's... something similar to "The Pulse" on XM/Sirius, which is a huge hit.

With 2010 approaching quickly, the 90's have barely been tapped. Seems like many stations are stuck in the 80's.

I doubt there will be an all 80's or all 90's format in a market like Terre Haute. It might be hard to sell, which is important in these times. It may work on XM/Sirius but that is pay radio. Plus there have been some90's formats tried in larger markets and they didn't fare well, plus the 80's formats didn't do well 5-10 years ago. I also doubt that 95.9 would go back to a rhythmic AC again, 95.9 energy fm was their position statement 6 years ago and it didn't work. As for crossroads doing country that would be interesting, but can it work? THC tried it in the 90's and WIN just tried it.

It's very interesting to hear all the opinions of where people think things will go. Here is what I know or think I know.

98.5 will switch to news talk at midnight tonight
102.7 will switch to mainstream ac (possibly with delilah at night) sometime soon
the crock...haven't heard anything
95.9 I would say no change there. I haven't heard anything about 80's or Urban AC.

I do not believe that a mainstream ac is a great move for anyone in this market today. Magic 101 was a good station but became a major player only after it switched to top 40 (MIX-FM). Sunny 95.9 tried it only to be beat to the punch by Lite Rock 102.7 WLEZ. Sunny carried Delilah. Sunny changed. WLEZ carried Delilah. WLEZ changed. Mainstream AC is not a good fit in this market unless you bring in a news department, full time staff & they are a true part of the community. It would have to be full service and offer a partnership with the community which right now, WBOW can not do with the staff that they have.

As far as News Talk goes, time will tell.

WINH is indeed flipping to all-news tonight (Feb. 17th) at midnight, and the new call letters will be WIBQ.

All airstaff members will remain with Midwest Communications.

Danny 'The Beemer' Wayne will move to weekends at Adult Hits WWSY.

Midday host Natalie Randall remains in the PD chair at WWSY.

PM driver Steve 'The Captain' Hall adds the title of News Director to his current position as the Production Director for the market cluster.

Night host 'Stacey' inherits the overnight slot on WWSY, as well as co-hosting mornings on CHR/Pop WMGI.

I'm glad that they are keeping Danny Wayne, even if it's only a weekend shift. He's one of the good guys in the Biz. I saw posted on this topic that Crossroads maybe going with a softer ac and airing Delilah? Hey you at 13th and Ohio, didn't you try the same thing with the Jones network and ran Delilah with little to no Suck-cess! If they try to pull this off again look for the same result! And please put the crock to rest and pull the plug. Sorry Marty, but someone overthere has to come to their sences and come up with something new.
By the way I saw a van at the downtown Hilton with WIXX on the sides. Guess the suits from MidWest are in town.

Danny Wayne is one of the good guys in the business. He is always consistent, topical, and local. If there were more guys like Danny Wayne in the market, local radio would be in good shape for years to come. Glad to see nobody is losing their job in this tough economy. We have one format flip down with a few technical difficulties in the midnight hour, and now we await another. I haven't seen these boards get this excited about format flips since Haddaway played on Mix-fm years ago as the first official song. Your next format is coming soon to WBOW, and only time will tell what it will be.

The people at 13th and Ohio don't know how to do anything unless they've already done it once and failed. So the rumors are probably true. They'll change it over to lite rock (again), air Deliliah at nights (again), and, who knows? Maybe they'll bring JD Sell back too...

If you don't learn from history, you're destined to repeat it.

As far as Danny Wayne is concerned, Danny is one of the few stand-up guys left in this business. Danny's the real deal. It will be a sad day in radio when he's not in the picture somehow--weekends or otherwise.
