Terry Lee-WJAS/WTAE AM in the 1980's/Other oldies questions

Hi Pittsbugh,
I lived in Philadelphia most of my life, but was born in Central, Pa.
I wanted to listen to Terry Lee's Show on WJAS, and found out that they do not stream. I later found out WJAS use to stream but discontinued it due budget costs. Is there any way they might start to stream again or is there some way possible that Terry Lee could stream his WJAS Show via his website. I discovered Terry Lee's Sound for Young Lovers via his album on the Lost Nite Record Label. Lost Nite record's were produced in Philadelphia. In the 80's a record collector introduced me to the Terry Lee, Porky Chadwick, and Mad Mike sounds. In 1983, I discovered that WTAE AM 1250, had oldies show on at every night on the week. Jay Mithchell had an oldies show on Monday- Friday from 9 to 1 at night. He would play oldies from the 50's through the mid 60's, with emphasis on R+B oldies. On Sunday Night form 6 to 10, Jay would play the Sounds of Pittsburgh. On Saturday Night from 7 to midnight, WTAE had a show called Saturday Night at the Oldies. I cannot remember who hosted that show. Around the spring of 1986 WTAE dropped these oldies shows for talk. WTAE signal would sneak into Philadelphia at night.
In the Spring/Summer of 1987, a stations from the Pittsburgh Area, which was around 1510 to 1550 on the AM dial, and the signal would come into Philadelphia. This station played music from the 50's and early 60's, and sounds were similar to Mad Mike's Music. I think by the end of 1987 this station changed formats. Does anybody have any knowledge of this particular situation?
Thank you Pittsburgh .

If Terry were so inclined (and I don't know him so I can't comment one way or the other on that) he could record the show digitally in the studio while on the air and then upload the recordings as podcasts, though that might put him in the same position of getting stuck with royalty payments that caused Renda to shut down the streaming to begin with. I am not sure what the rule is regarding podcasts, if it is the same streaming audio or not. But from a strictly would it be possible standpoint, yes it would be.

Terry could offer the shows on his website. Royalty issues don't seem to concern him since his site sells CDs of old shows that include Beatles records.

He could offer them as long as Renda does allow it. But with SoundExchange fees now the station may still be responsible as they are the originating point of the material. Ahhh, legal issues keeping and creating jobs for radio again.

This message is posted on Terry Lee's official web site at http://www.tlsoundco.com:

We are trying to bring you the WJAS Sunday night shows on this website....stay tuned and turn up the volume!

You are listening to the first hour of the first show on 1320 WJAS-AM Pittsburgh, April 25, 2010. Enjoy!

(These first recordings have not been equalized...we are still working on this, so please be patient!)

So, yes, he's trying to make the shows available at his site, probably in archived form.

In regards to your question about who hosted "Saturday Night At the Oldies" on WTAE, for a good part of the time it was Mike Farrow. 1250 WTAE was a fantastic station back in the early '80's. They played a top 40/oldies music mix during the day, and then all oldies from the 50's & '60's at night and on weekends. What I wouldn't give to have a station like that in town now.

sounds like a much better use for 970 then being the 3rd or 4th place sports station

The Station was WNVU 1510 Monroeville Pa.[Now WPGR]Terry was the Manager and turned it to Oldies Format, Hosting the Afternoon shift. In April 1988 the station became WXVX [ie 1510]and became a "Rock"station.

Speaking of WJAS are they Running with their new night power of 3300 watts, I live in North Hills where Beaver and Butler counties come together, The night Signal is Bad, Static, Being Overran by another station.
in the 70's we listened to 13Q and the Signal was Strong 24/7. I hope this is just Testing.

How long has 3WS been playing older oldies on Sunday nights? Has that been there for awhile? Or are they reacting to TL's return?

I was back in the Pittsburgh area last weekend for the first time in years. That specialty show played "Walk" by the Fenways. Cool.

More cool: I still knew all the words!

The Diner has changed a bit since RD passed. He would never play "Walk." He always wanted the vocal group sounds. They played "I Live For The Sun" by the Sunrays recently. RD never would have considered that.
