Texas Mix 99.7 overriding K-star Country...what's up with that?

Did Texas Mix 105.3 get a new translator?

I am getting this Texas Mix crap in Deer Park and even in Crosby.

Anyone know what's up? It has to have just been turned on over the weekend if a translator is the case.

What a waste of a frequency. Hardly any DJ's and not exactly the type of country I'm interested in.

You are probably hearing KROY 99.7 out of Palacios which, according to the Texas Mix Facebook page, began running the format in late February.

Tropo has been kicking up lately with the warmer weather, so KROY is probably getting out quite nicely.

KROY will probably give some grief to the upcoming LPFM in Galveston.

Other than 3 translators (nowhere NEAR Houston area) on 99.7 (and KSBJ owns one in Brenham...forgot about that one..did some work on it back in 03), the only other 99.7 playing country in Texas is KBCY in Tye, TX (West of Abilene)....Must be some heavy tropo...but if you dont hear an ID, then it must be a pirate....

Radio-Locator didnt show that one (not surprised....) Didnt look at the FCC database for 99.7 full power stations...still good tropo..

Skip season --- usually plays havoc. It does a real number on HD even 20 miles from the antennas.

Interestingly I was getting this Texas Mix on 105.3 a few days ago. I do remember hearing an ID that included 99.7.

No offense but I HATE translators. Did something change in the past 10 years for the FCC to allow so many translators to operate? The FM dial is overcrowded now.

Yes, the FCC just had open filing windows for translators....the LPFMs will also crowd the band with more religious crap from those just looking for more tax free money..(and if you listen to the 96.1 in Livingston, you can hear them play full 1min commercials!!! They are NOT underwritings when they say the location, phone number and hours of business and what they have to sell!)

Texas Mix 99.7 was overriding K Star 99.7 in Humble

I live in Humble and TExas Mix 99.7 was overriding K Star 99.7 in Humble a few days ago too. That surprised me as I didn't realize that 105.3 had a translator at 99.7. I would enjoy listening to both of the stations if either one had enough power to come in clearly at my house in Humble.

Texas Mix 99.7, KROY, is licensed for 50kW (with a CP for 100kW) from Palacios/Matagorda

Which is what KROY is running now, and why the OP is now hearing 99.7 from his location. Combined with KHTZ 94.9 in Ganado, Texas Mix covers a lot of rural area, which fits well with a Texas Country format.

It is simply that time of year again when FM signals are affected by tropospheric induction. Last week KASE 100.7 in Austin was
loud and clear in the KKHT control room. This condition is hardly noticeable if the station's stick is in Missouri City. However, all the move-ins (or rimshots) and stations not licensed to Houston are likely to be affected.

Considering KKHT is licensed to Lumberton..and its on the 2000 ft (former CC) Devers tower which was built in the 80s for 98.5 out of Port Arthur (now on a different tower), I am not surprised KASE blows into Houston that way (the DJs at 98.5 would get PISSED if DaBeat on 98.5 out of San Antonio would blow in...but there was nothing the "gringo" engineers could do; seriously, the morning DJ on KHYS tried to get them fired because his wife could not hear him in Sugarland)....25 years ago, there was a 99.x translator that was retransmitting KASE in Willis/Conroe area and injecting local spots (allowed under FCC rules...only 1 minute per hour)...but then it wasnt paying the tower rent to American Tower so it went away...(the cabinet, etc was still at the site..I have the Heliax and yagis that were used on that system...one run of Heliax to the 300 ft level where the transmit antennas were had a splice in it..and filled up with water on a regular basis which is probably why the translator died in the 1st place! ;) )

Wikipedia is NOT known for keeping up with current changes...they demand references when posting information but then it never gets updated...so I would trust Wiki on current info with a grain of salt...Radio-Locator.com is not much better...

Wanna hear a funny? The tower site Roy Henderson used in his C1/100KW application upgrade? WAS an ATC tower that was dismantled late in August 2013....Guess his CP will likely expire since he cannot go C1 at the current site...OOOPS!

You are not a funny, even if you are from East Texas, CW.

ContinuousWave -

You should dig deeper into your...er... facts.

KROY is located on a newer American Tower that replaced the old one that was taken down some time ago.

Your sour grapes are looking more like raisins.
