Texas Radio Hall of Fame and Ken Hoffman?

Can someone post the Comical's 7.23.12 article by, or about, Ken Hoffman over looked for the TRHoF? I'm thinking it was done in jest, I hope. Hoffman is a talented scribe, but not a radio dude. The list of Houston stations which have given him a shot is long, and they probably gave him air thinking they would get tons of free pub in the Comical. Didn't every station he was on end up going dark or changing formats? Again, great writer, but has a voice for the printed word, not audio. I think he's been a wanna bee radio star since he was 16-years old and realized the hot jocks get all the hot babes. (programming note: Stones, Can't Always Get What You Want, is song of the day, crank it up, blow out a monitor!...tell engineering it must have been one of the weekend jocks.)

It's not that hard to find things on chron.com.

Hoffman's complaint isn't that he is being overlooked for the hall, it's that John Lander hasn't made it in yet.

Hoffman used to write comedy for Lander.

Unbelievable that Lander hasn't been inducted already.

Stan, there are a lot of good radio people who have not been nominated. I nominated Alfred P. Daniel. He was an announcer on Houston's 1st radio station WEV and on his own station, WCAK beginning in 1922. He was called the Dean of Houston Radio. He passed away in 1953. I think it's important to vote for the folks who brought us all here. I felt this man should have been nominated. Although I sent in his name, it did not appear in overall list of those nominated. After all, this man was here in the very beginning of Houston radio. That alone should count for something.

Good points Chuck. It's worth noting that simply being a frequent "guest" on somebody's radio show does not qualify that person for the Radio Hall of Fame. Ken Hoffman has never had a radio job anywhere, and based on my own opinions after hearing him a few times, I can't say I'm surprised.

While we're on the subject of people who SHOULD be in the hall, how about the legendary Phil Parr? He's in his 70s and he's still working up here in east Texas. He built a production room at his house and he makes money recording commercials, promos and bumpers for several radio stations out and about.

Phil is the most remarkable and talented radio person I've ever known, and I don't know anybody who deserves to be in the Radio Hall of Fame more than he does.

You can catch him on FM 103 The Bull at http://kjcs.streamon.fm/

I used to listen to Phil Parr on 920 KTLW in the late 1960s. Years later, while on the air at KTLW (my 1st radio job), Phil stopped by the radio station to talk with Joey Jay (JJ the DJ) who was also my 1st program director. Joey and Phil shared some of the antics of their times together both on and off the air, with me. Incredibly, Phil was blind, yet could do radio better than most who were sighted. By all means, Phil Parr belongs in the TRHOF.

You're right, Chuck. There are many deserving of the honor, going back more decades than Lander and including the others mentioned here.

Can't believe "Cousin" Jerry King isn't in the HOF. Been at KKYX since 1975. Still does the morning-drive show. Been at other stations around South Texas since the 60's. A member of the Country DJ Hall of Fame but not the TRHOF.

Chuck, you may have run across him back in your KIKN days :)

Filio.... Ken did actually hold down a radio gig at 1560 The Game when it first came on the air a few years back... he was on during the midday hours...a couple of hours a day.

Oops. You're right. I forgot about that. It appears all four of his listeners forgot about it too. He's just not as funny as his mother tells him he is.

Truth to tell, print journalists rarely make good radio personalities. Two completely different mediums that demand completely different skills.

I'm still disgusted with the Chronicle for laying off so many really good reporters and keeping a no-talent like Hoffman, and several others we could name.

I find people actively campaigning for themselves or close friends to be nominated to be a practice that is distasteful. Just my opinion.

Thanks John Davis. I ask because the person telling me the story is not a radio guy. Now the story makes more sense. Hoffman has been carrying Lander's water for years, or at least getting him coffee and donuts. I would think Mr. Lander would be more concerned about getting in the Maschust. Radio Hall of Fame. Didn't he get canned a couple of years ago when CBS was cutting all their dead weight morning shows? Also, I would hope Mr. Tiller will start jotting down all his thoughts of radio, now and back "then." Mr. Tiller, you have a great knowledge of radio around here, and fortunately for us, tremendous recall.

I appreciate your kind words, however, when it comes to the history of Houston radio, Bruce Williamson, formerly of KODA, KAUM, KIKK, AND KILT, has accumulated a wealth of information concerning Houston's broadcasting contributions. There was a lot of things I did not know and also cleared up misconceptions of mine own concerning the history of our city.

I have been making notes about my time before and during radio and my interaction with the folks whom I have worked with in this business. Sometime down the line, I will get that assimilated and put something together for my website which will be undergoing a change this year.
