I got an opportunity to work with Paxton at KOSI in Denver. He was a really nice guy. I can't believe it's been 6 years since his passing. I still remember that booming voice strolling into the studio at 4:30am.

The Rocky Mountain News published an article a couple days ago concerning the fall of KIMN, Paxton's death, and his former KIMN co-host Scott Cortelyou's problems with the law.

Congratulations to the class of '07 on their honors! I've worked with these two and they are classy. I'm surprised they weren't in sooner.

This is a GREAT group of honorees!!

Larry Dixon is one of classiest people I have ever known and a tremendous talent. Many around here are familiar with his work at KVIL, but if you never heard him as a morning man on WAPE, doing bits like "Nixon & Dixon" from the early 70's, you may not have ever heard the "other" side of L.D.!

Jack Schell is one of the hardest working jocks I've ever seen. I don't think there is an ounce of "slack" in his mind! His show is always a "continuing conversation".

Randy Robins is one of the guys listed that many of the younger folks may not remember around here but he was one of THEE greatest night jocks in this area, maybe the country, EVER! First at KFJZ in the 60's and then in the 70's at KLIF and KNUS. He DEFINES "shuck & jive" radio! May not be everyone's cup o' tea, but I always thought he was awesome. He's also one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. "...Big R, Sweet Sweet Randy Robins, ain't never harmed nobody on the radio, just bidin' my time here at KLIF till the big time calls...."

Gary DeLaune was the guy manning the newsroom at KLIF when JFK was assasinated and aired the first bulletins and anchored the initial coverage and then top-notch reporting throughout that weekend, including his infamous "out of breath" reports after witnessing Oswald's shooting. He did an amazing job in the face of such monumental tragic breaking worldwide news right in front of him, the impact of which has never been seen since, including 9-11. That work alone should earn him this honor, but he went on to a successful career in television after 1963 in Dallas and San Antonio, which is worthy of significant note as well.

YES! A fantastic group this year....congratulations to all.

Absolutely! Jack Schell was a big influence when I was starting out. Very glad to see he made it. Bob Bruton as well - a class act. I've been nominating him for years. And Sweet Randy...I had a memorable birthday dinner with him and Tom Bigby, but I don't think they's let me give details here ::)

Had the "pleasure" of working with Baxter (remember he also wrote for Flying magazine; BAX Seat)...
He was a PITA at times but also a legend in SE Texas (he did maybe one day on KTRH :) Baxter and Al Caldwell in Beaumont really introduced a lot of talent over the years....
Bax also has a airpsace named after him by the FAA (The "Baxter Intersection" just outside of Beaumont)
He always went against the format at KLVI when it was Top40...with Bax talking or playing country...when KLVI dumped Top40 for country, the 1st song Bax played was "Smoke on the Water" !!!

Met Arch once when working for Dave Morris back in the 70s but of course knew of him at KNUZ/KQUE....Glad to see he finally made it!

and congrats to Jon....enjoyed working with ya, big guy.....it was an honor.

When I knew Gary DeLaune in 1967 and 1968 at KNUZ, he could fairly be described as a buffoon. Blue jacket, yellow vest, red tie, pink shirt, green slacks - all he needed was a cap and bells. And he couldn't even read his own copy on the air without stumbling over it. In one live shot he did from the 1968 GOP national convention in Miami, he had written something about "the winding halls" of the convention center. But when he read it on the air, he read "winding" with a short "i" instead of a long "i." He was let go shortly after the summer of '68, when the powers that be at KNUZ had finally had enough of his insufferable ego. He wasn't able to find another gig in Houston for the next couple of years, because he couldn't find any general managers who were willing to go along with his absurdly inflated estimate of himself. After a couple of years reading announcements over the public address system at the Astrodome, he slunk out of town under cover of darkness, headed for San Antonio.

Whew! Well Gary did an admirable job being the voice of the ABA San Antonio Spurs and a great sportscaster on KENS filling in for Dan Cook ,plus weekeknds. Though I will admit he did try to copy "Cosell" With his word play "The Mighty monstrous Minutemen of Memorial High" or "The Rousing Rambling Rebelous Volunteers of Robert E.Lee". Otherwise Gary was a nice guy and pretty much down to earth. Maybe what you had to say was true, but he seemed to have left that in Houston when he came to SA.

Loved reading that Arch Yancey made it. My goodness, if anyone should be honored it's Arch. Thank goodness it finally happened! He's been around for a long time and done it all. Is he still doing sales?

Also, Jack Schell. I remember him as a fellow student at UNT. All he ever wanted to be was a radio man. It's always wonderful to see a guy find his place and love every minute of it! Congratulations, Jack.

I'm trying to remember. Has the honor been given Bud Buschardt? If not, we owe him an apology and need to get busy getting him elected next year. As we all know, Bud has done an enormous amount for radio in the area as well as nationally. Even teaches the stuff as an adjunct professor at UNT.

ABC has NEVER even come close to taking advantage of all of his ability. They'd apparently rather listen to the young bucks.

Bud is in. He was inducted last year. He is on the board of advisers as well. Go to the Texas radio Hall of Fame site.
