Hey y'all,

I just want to thank everybody who voted for me and supported me. Especially Chuck Tiller! This is a great moment in my career and I couldn't be happier right now! Thanks again, and I'll see you at Tin Hall on November the 8th! All my best too, to my fellow inductees. What a fantastic group of people!!

Three cheers for the Colonel!!!! And great to see Bill Bailey and Scott Arthur finally made it in. All three are class acts.

Congratulations, Colonel... it's been 29 years since we worked together (seems like only 28?). I'm honored to have worked with or listened to almost everyone on this years list.

It was very cool to see video from The Larry Kane Show online. I had the privilege of meeting him once, and met quite a few young people who were on his show over the years. That was one of the few things that could keep me indoors on a Saturday.

Finally, a note about the station owner who gave me my first opportunity, Jim Gibbs started KIVY in Crockett in 1949, and ran it as a one-man, daylight to dark operation for several years. 40 years ago, he trusted a goofy 16 year-old kid to take care of his investment for about 40-60 hours a week... the best on-the-job training anybody could ask for. Not only was he a real professional radio man, but he also took time to keep me squared away in a 'fatherly' manner, as well. Jim passed away last year, and while KIVY might not rise to the level of HOF standards, Jim Gibbs and a few hundred more small-market owners like him certainly exemplify what the HOF stands for. I had the honor of working for J.C. Stallings, Dana Adams and family, the Cauthen family and others, but Jim gave me my first chance, and for that I will be eternally grateful. Those guys stepped up when radio was a totally different crap-shoot than it is today. It was fun, for sure.

Yes, I did. Fred Stockton agreed to let us host the event at his place. Most everyone seemed to enjoy it last time. This will be more of a "boots 'n jeans" event. We will have a pre-program mixer, a sit down luncheon, and a fully produced program for our 12 honorees.

If you are wondering, there WILL be another radio reunion. We pushed it back to 2010, in anticipation that the Hall of Fame ceremony would be here this year-and it is!

By the way, if you are interested in volunteering your services to say, pass out nametags, place programs on tables, etc, I'd gladly swap you a couple of tickets each for the help-I'm gonna need it. E-Mail me. [email protected]

Hey Josh,

I'll be happy to help, any way I can. It will be an honor. My e-mail is: [email protected]

Ed,

I have a story to tell you about Jim Gibbs. The guy was also a pilot and quite involved in the operation of the local Crockett airport, too. On my first cross-country, as a 16-year old, I landed there to get my bearings (IOW, I was lost as a goose). I called the number on the wall for fuel, and Jim came out and brought me into town to get some lunch; then, took me back out there, afterwards. I guess he just had a soft spot in his big old heart for kids like us. Sorry to hear he is gone. Another old East Texas broadcaster I miss is Hal Hailey at KETX. We lost him not long ago, too.

He did a lot at that airport... I don't think it actually had a budget, he did a lot of it out of his pocket. I have heard many of stories about him giving people fuel when they landed out there, or driving them to get needed parts. That plane of his made a lot of trips to Colorado, and usually returned full of Coors. I loved hanging out at his house (with the Coors), and watching his color TV. Watched the Apollo 11 moonwalk there. If I'd had half a brain, I would have had him teach me to fly. He offered to send me to Elkins once, but I didn't want to leave my friends for the summer. I'm guessing a first ticket would have made a difference in my life, too.

His wife Bettye worked at the station, too. She could take dictation over the phone on her IBM Selectric, and still listen to our stupid conversations at the same time. She passed away a few years back from cancer. They were a great team.

I remember him catching me firing up the station about 2am one morning to play a couple of songs for my friends... they were skinny dipping at the city pool, next door to the station (he was always listening)... and countless times he chewed me out on the 2-way. One of my mother's friends had a scanner, so she always knew I was in trouble... anyway, there were hundreds of those guys back in the day. If I were older, I hope I would have been one of them. Working at that little station for Jim Gibbs changed my life.

Is KETX-AM still on the air? I know a lot of AM's have gone away... KEEE has been dark for years. Last time I was in Nac I tuned to 1230 and was almost in tears. That place probably sent over a hundred guys to major markets during the late '60's thru the '80's.

Congrats to all from Houston. Wished Wash Allen's (KCOH) name would have been on there too. Maybe next year. I know it will be a great evening!

Thanks to all who voted for me - WOW what an honor ... what great company to be in! And a major, sincere thanks to Josh and Berlin for their support.

Congratulations to everyone that made it this year! It was great to see my dear friend and boss, Cathy Forsythe, make the club. Many thanks to those of you who voted for her, it means a lot to her family and friends.
