TEXAS RADIO HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS

Last night (Oct 27) the Texas Radio Hall of Fame inducted its newest members.

Highlights included appearances by Arch Yancey, Gary DeLaune, Larry Dixon, Terry Dorsey, Roy Eaton, Bob Bruton, Randy Robins and Jack Schell.

Gary DeLaune proved once again what a great writer he is in addition to his fine broadcasting skills. Randy Robins showed that his "shuck and jive" is still very much alive and well (he should be on the radio right NOW!), Larry Dixon shined with class as he always does (who knew he idolized Dan Ingram?), Jack Schell may speak for a half hour but if you're not laughing the whole time, well then you just don't get Jack (Schell, that is)...Bob Bruton and Roy Eaton were very gracious, Terry Dorsey thanked "Hawkeye" who he said was "..just waiting for me to die so it will all be HIS..." (great line), Peggy Sears explained her unpredictable rise to fame, Jon Dillon reminisced about KFAD and the Zoo ...other highlights included a heartfelt acceptance by the son of Dick Risenhoover and appreciation from Paxton Mills' son. Even the recorded acceptances by legendary Dan Ingram and Charlie Jones were a treat.

Overall a smooth production with no obvious glitches. As awards ceremonies go, this one was entertaining and efficient (over by 10:30 p.m.).

Excellent, indeed! (And good to see ya, Steve!)

Dorsey's line reminded me of something that Dan Potter might have once thought about Hal. :p And no mention of Terry and his "Bowling for Dollars" revival in the 1980s on his resume!

I always heard that Larry Lujack was Dixon's hero. Probably best to distance himself from Lujack anyway, as listeners' memories are probably more of the latter-day Lujack after he became tired and bitter on the air.

Strange how when the 'sons of' get older, how much they resemble their fathers...Chris Risenhoover and Josh Holstead for two...I felt like I was talking to Joe there a couple of times!

Talked to Paxton's son before the program, and had no idea who he was. He never said. Steve, hope you got some contact info from him; I'm sure he'd be invaluable to your KLIF history.

Good to see Murphy Martin and his wife there. Both have been sick recently, and she's taking regular cancer treatments but doing fine.

Several inductees made comments on the industry and how we should all work to get it back to the way it was...get the beancounters and corporations out of the way and make it fun again and make it mean something. Great motivation, but we all know the reality here.

Another great one from Larry Shannon...kudos for a very nice presentation.

I did speak with Harry Paxton Mills son. He and I have been in contact before. I had something to give him but he got away before I was able to. I have the original Paxton Mills Show Outro cart from KLIF that he used to close every show with. The pads on the cart had to be replaced but the cart still plays with excellent audio. I thought they'd like to have it...I will get it to them.

As for bean counters, they've always been there and they always will. The secret is finding a way to work WITH the bean counters to accomplish the overall goal. Declaring war usually results in assured failure...and, more often than not, something even worse - unemployment.

I agree with Steve and Mike's summations of the evening. My favorite moment was when Peggy Sears "gonged" Jack when he was beginning to run a little long.

Lots of good stories, lots of good memories and a lot of great talent. I only wish there were more of the previous inductees there to welcome the new honorees.

"Gary DeLaune proved once again what a great writer he is in addition to his fine broadcasting skills."

What would I do, if I didn't have this place to come to for comic relief?

Have you done anything even remotely resembling what this man has done for 40 + years? Have you accomplished half as much as this man has in his distinguished career?
Then kindly observe radio-info silence.

For those who were at the Houston ceremonya few years back, there were only a few "and then there was Marconi" moments, and it ended at 10:30 instead of 2:30! :)

I was supposed to be the designated time keeper, but Peggy grabbed the bell when my back was turned! Though I would have never shut Jack Schell up. That is the last thing any of us, or any PD would ever want to do!

I am already working the wrinkles out to have the shindig in Houston in 2008. I have a few things up my sleeve to make it a more social and a little less stuffy. I mean, really, how many of us own even one good suit? If we do and we were there Saturday, we wore it.
