TEXAS RADIO HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS

A lot of folks from DFW, San Antonio, Houston have already made it in. What about some of the talents who were in the smaller markets?

Downloaded my ballot today and am staring at an empty page.

Does anyone have any suggestions of who to nominate?

If he isn't already in it, Tom Perriman in Tyler would be a good choice. He has been around radio since the early 1950's. (Maybe earlier.) He was once a partner in KGRI in Henderson, along with Jim Reeves, the country singer. He possesses a wealth of East Texas radio history, and still does a live show on "The Ranch" in Tyler. Out here, he has a pretty big following.

I hope I'm doing as well when I'm in my 80's. In fact, I hope I make it to my 80's....

I agree. There are dozens of incredibly talented people (that for whatever reason) might have been overlooked due to market size. That certainly does not take way from their talent and contributions.

Tyler had some GREAT ones (like Tom) Dave Moreland, Bill Davis, Bill Coates and others.

Bryan/College Station had Roger W. Garrett longer than Houston and Austin did, and I have already mentioned his partner Roy Gene Munse. Roy has one of my slots already.

There are others who made entire careers in the Valley, Lufkin-Nacogdoches (Hello, Larry Gunter?) as well as the greater Golden Triangle.

I'm inspired-and going small town this year.

Thanks! :)

Joe Bagby, John McCarty, Dick Siegel, Frank Jolley, Ron Selden, Jim Thomas and Sam Pate. About time to get Eberhart in there, too.

Some very good choices, Mike, but you forgot Mike Shannon, without whom no one in the D/FW market would have any idea who worked where and "where" was, plus THEE definitive history of AM radio, FM radio and TV in the D/FW market.
Definitely a work of art that puts the D/FW market in total scope for anyone and everyone!

Jay, I greatly appreciate the kudos, but as I say every year about this time, I'm WAY down the list of anyone who deserves to be in the TRHOF. To be put in before the likes of Sam Pate, Joe Bagby, Willis Johnson, Frank Jolley, Dick Siegel, etc would really be a travesty. I would suggest, however, that Larry Shannon go back to how he did the voting in Year 1, by dividing it amongst categories...production, on-air, management, etc. THEN possibly add a 'historian' category for guys like Chris Huff, Tom Ellis, Bruce the Houston historian and me. I'd be perfectly fine with that, but with my limited contributions to the industry as a "talent," nah, no way. All I did was find a few lucky niches in the waning days of the industry and had fun with it. "Radio" is not what we see it as today, and none of us are really paving the way for anything these days...we're all just waiting for the curtain to fall, and trying to hold on and milk it for a few more bucks before it caves.

Is this the same Chris Huff, the "ratings maven/savant/scholar/student" that usually breaks down the PPM's on the TRI newsletter, or somebody different?

My long-time friend Bill Buchanan has been nominated for induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Bill is not only a good friend of mine, but I believe Bill is, perhaps, the finest small-market broadcaster in the state...if not the country! Bill owns and operates KSHN in Liberty, Texas. I believe that a good many of his fellow TAB members, as well as others, would agree with my description of Bill.

If you are a voting member of The Texas Radio Hall of Fame, would you PLEASE consider making Bill one of your (3) choices for induction. A number of people in the Liberty-Dayton-South Liberty County area have joined the Texas Radio Hall of Fame just so they can vote for him. Those people are just ordinary citizens (not broadcasters). They so believe in Bill and the remarkable job his radio station has done over the years he's been there, that they have joined together to push for Bill's induction. If you would consider joining us in the effort, it would be greatly appreciated!

I sincerely thank you for your time and consideration.

P.S. If you are not a member of the TRHoF, and would like to become one, you can click on this link www.texasradiohalloffame.com and find-out how to become a member. Voting has started and will continue through about the first week in July.

Couldn't agree more about Bill.. He has been through a lot over many years and still survives... Plus he is a very nice person...

So no broadcasting experience is necessary to become a voting member of the TRHOF? Hell, are you even required to be a legal resident of the state of Texas to sign up?

Re: TEXAS RADIO HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS -

One of the board members told a friend of mine that this is Larry Shannon's last year to be the manager of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and that they are searching for someone to handle all the effort of putting together the nominations and voting, and putting on the induction events after this year. They said he decided that he'd done it since the first event and for 10 years and felt it was time for someone else to take over the duties. Term limits, I guess. Good idea!

So, maybe they will change the way the nominations and voting are done. I hear that some have suggested that a special panel of judges would pick the inductees each year and eliminate the voting by members. Members would just nominate, not vote. Wonder if that would work?

So many great nominess this year.

I would've guessed that half of them were already in.

Wish I could vote for more than three.

Three among the outstanding choices to consider:

Mary "Sam" Stoddard (KLIF, KVIL, KNON, KSKY, KOAI, etc)

David Gold (KLIF, WBAP + others)

Jim Rose (Heard on approx 30 Texas stations between 1965 & 1996. In DFW on: KLIF, KBOX, KFJZ, KXOL, KJIM, WFAA, etc.)

Phil Parr, the blind DJ, singer-songwriter from Lufkin who worked at KSPL in Diboll for several years is an amazing talent who has been overlooked for years also.
