TEXAS RADIO HALL OF FAME?

I am mildly surprised this has not been raised as a topic, since the inductees were announced about a month ago. There are some who deserve it,and there are others I am not sure about. The catagories to vote in are not that defined, pretty general. In other words a Big name like George Carlin is being inducted, yet there are some minor names who have been in radio far longer than George and were competiting against him in the same catagory. I am not saying George doesn't deserve it,but some lesser known names (in some cases) deserve it more. I do question the way the voting is conducted and the way the committee is selected. I feel it is tilted in favor of the Big names and the "well connected",instead of being balanced. Dues paying members are only ones elgible to vote, and thats the way it should remain. It is flawed though as it leaves open the possibility of "vote collaboration". Farfetched? Congress does it all the time. The catagories should be spread out so Producers, copywriters,Production personnel who have done outstanding work will not be overlooked. As it stands now,the Big Names will have a solid run for the next 25 years while some of the true "workhorses" who made the Big Names" are left out. Reform is needed, but it too will be over looked. Finally, NO I am not seeking to be inducted by any methods, means ,etc. NOR am I upset that I wasn't nominated or inducted. I am upset that some of my fellow colleagues who live and breathe radio for the last 25 years or more in Texas alone have been.

This, like so many others, is simply a popularity contest. I don't know if there is a good way to balance the scales between the little guy and the superstar. And in the long run...the overall scheme of things...it really doesn't make any difference anyway.

I think there's also some hope that, if a big name is nominated and chosen, that the Hall of Fame banquet will lure such a person to attend (i.e. George Carlin, Sam Donaldson, Dan Rather, etc.) It helps to sell tickets and to lend some more credibility to the HOF. Does it seem like there are fewer names chosen on this year's list? And many of them are deceased as well that were picked.

Agreed. It's not like the TRHOF has a building with bronze busts of the inductees. Certainly it would be an honor to be voted in but as far a posterity goes there's no physical building where the winner's kids and grandkids and other radio enthusiasts can visit to hear the inductees' broadcast recordings, read their history etc.<P ID="signature">______________

I don't think anyone would deny it would be cool to be inducted, BUT...
the first couple of years they covered those who were TRULY worthy of the nod. Since then it has become somewhat of a stretch.

Agreed. TRHOF should re-evaluate itself after this years induction ceremonies. I concurwith another's post that it is a "popularity contest". Talk about High School Student council elections and Homecoming Queen contest, this years ballot was worse. Impartiality is the word of the day to make it better, followed by the question "how"? I won't be in attendance this year, and who knows after that. Change in procedures is much needed, but is the TROF committee willing to admit that?
