The 2010 4BH Top 1000 Best Songs Of All Time

Wow - They really go for ABBA down under, don't they? 4 songs in the top 40 (2 in the top 10)! You know "Mama Mia" got in there only because of the movie.

I think I'll have fun perusing this list in more detail when I get time. Just on the first few pages I saw some long forgotten gems like "Tar & Cement" by Verdelle Smith and "Single Girl" by Sandy Posey.

In 1976-77 or so, ABBA was to Australia what the Beatles were to the US in 1964. They had a lotta top 10 songs, possibly 5 in the top 10 at the same time at one point. "Mamma Mia" was a hit there long before the play, in summer '76 (went top 40 here at that time).

IIRC, even "Hasta Manana", the B-side to (I think) "SOS" went top 40 there.

Their label seemed to be releasing singles every 4 weeks or so, and the public ate it up.

This playlist is pretty awesome (like all of 4BH's Top 1000 lists) and even though it might be a little Aussie-centric (Tina Arena and John Farnham aren't as well known here, but they make for nice surprises.) it all blends in together -as only 4BH can do it. In this list, I see the very best of the Lite AC/Standards/Oldies formats and how they can all come together in one nice tight little package. I always thought this is how KIXI in Seattle should sound.

Some songs that really jumped out at me:

776. "Mambo No.5" Lou Bega - Are we REALLY ready to hear THAT one on your standards station? It came out in 1999 and while it's a (sort of) classic. I liked Lou Bega's version, until every other taco restaurant ad burnt us all out on it (Perez Prado did the original, but Bega added lyrics) I kinda err on the side of "you don't wanna mess with a classic" and kept the original in the playlist.

162. "Love Hurts" Jim Capaldi - Some would argue for Roy Orbison's original, others for even Nazareth's remake, but this rare version catches my ear a little better. (another Jim Capaldi classic "That's Love" from 1983 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOBVlu2FeGg )

99. "Mississippi" Pussycat - You know, sometimes there's a song that you really wonder why it never became a hit in the USA, especially on country radio like this little chestnut from this Dutch group. This song easily stands shoulder to shoulder with any song on American country/pop radio in the '70s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSAR2C60Jk8

This year, no "Bohemian Rhapsody" Queen. Maybe it is a little too much for this type of format after all......

I don't think so, but I like it. Still, Taco's "Puttin' On the Ritz" made it to Dial Global even with all the high-tech stuff, and I even heard it on the local morning show on the Dial Global station during the all-request segment. It sounds good in its own way.

I read somewhere that Radio Disney asked for permission to edit the lyrics, and he recorded a new cleaner version with Minnie and Daisy.

On a related note, Blu Cantrell's "Hit 'Em Up Style" has some really ancient-sounding jazz or related music, but overall it's probably too hot for standards.

While on vacation this past month in Australia, I had a chance to listen to 4BH while in the Brisbane area. It's a very good station. Lots of local news, traffic reports and weather, as we are used to here in US in big-market stations. Puts out a decent signal too. Just weird to look at car-radio dial and see a frequency not ending in "0".
