"Save us from Rush, Boortz, and Hannity, who can't speak with a dissenting caller without insulting them."
Insulting dissenting callers is to political talk radio what screaming into a mic is to pro wrestling. It's part of the show. It's what the fans expect. News/talk radio is to political discussion what pro wrestling is to sports. Just as pro wrestling is "sports entertainment", news/talk radio is "political news entertainment".
When fans watch pro wrestling, they cheer for the babyface and boo at the heel. That's what the spectacle is all about. When fans listen to news/talk radio, they expect to be able to cheer the host and boo the dissenting callers. If you're looking for calm, reasonable discussion of political issues among rational, sensible people, you aren't going to find it on the radio -- especially if members of the listening audience get to phone in and be on the air.
The only difference between pro wrestling and news/talk radio is that news/talk radio hosts can't fake their political beliefs very well over the long haul because their "bouts" run too long.
