Local AM Stations that have gone more than five years without a format change:

570 -- in 2000, switched to CNN Headline News in the three-way swap with 570, 620 and 1250
2/01 -- "Money 570" format from the Tampa Tribune/ Channel 8 studios
9/01 -- Salem religious format -- 8 years, 3 months without a change

620 -- in 2000, became WDAE in the three-way swap
9 years, 11 months without a change

760 -- 10 years without a format change

910 -- see 570 -- 9 years without a format change
970 -- 10 years without a format change
1110 -- 10 years without a format change
1150 -- 10 years without a format change
1250 -- 9 years, 11 months without a change
1300 -- 10 years without a format change
1380 -- 10 years without a format change

1520 -- 10 years without a format change

... and this doesn't count stations that simply swapped frequencies, like WWBA, or stations that made slight adjustments such as WTAN adding Music of Your Life to fill unsold time. Nor does it include stations like 1010, which since 2000 have spun the format wheel from sports to hot talk to classic country, only to come back to sports
 
Very interesting. I might add that 1150 WTMP (formerly WIOK) has essentially kept the same programming for probably around 55 years, although with some tweaking as musical styles evolved. It also relies more on satellite personalities and less on local personalities than it did in its earlier years.

When did WIOK become WTMP? And, didn't Robert W. Rounsaville own WTMP at one time? As I recall, WTMP was also a daytimer licensed to Tampa before changing COL to Temple Terrace in the early '80s with the addition of 2.5kw night service. I'm not sure why WTMP later reduced its night service and changed its COL again, this time to Egypt Lake? Would you know the answer?
 
WTMP built a six-tower array in 1980-81, near U.S> Highway 301 northeast of Temple Terrace, just for its night signal. The signal delivered NIF coverage to Temple Terrace (city of license) with a lobe that went over north Tampa and another that hit Lakeland. But due south, toward its studio, it was unlistenable. So the station dismantled its six-tower setup and went back (I think) to Class D operation at its old day site next to the Selmon Expressway in the 90's, before moving to Egypt Lake and the former 1250-WDAE site about ten years ago.

How are you defining "format change"? 970, for example, has been news/talk since 1987, which is 22 years by my math.

Radio Years is truly a fantastic radio website. Anybody in the central Florida area that has not visited it should do so!

It's about defining the decade. We're talking about whether there were any changes between 2000 and 2009. There can't be more than ten years in a decade. The point is to contrast this lack of change with previous decades where there was a lot more change -- when AM stations were actually trying to get listeners.

For example, 620 changed formats five times during the 90's, and six if you go from 1989 to 1999.
1250 changed about three times (nostalgia to 101 FM simulcast to Froggy, back to simulcast, then sports).
570 flipped two or three times. 820 flipped three times (religion to news-talk to sports to Spanish)

RadioYears.Com is truly an amazing website dedicated to Central Florida radio. I agree that Jim Maloy has done an outstaning job piecing it all together.

Another website dedicated to Central Florida radio history you may find of interest is cflradio.net. There's tons of information on that site as well with a history of some stations not listed on radioyears.com. Likewise radioyears.com has some stations not listed on cflradio.net, namely the Tampa Bay stations.

The true identity of smedge is driving people nuts... everytime you post stuff, people ask me if I know who you are/where you work... I could care less... your posts are great though.
