The Bengals are playing Football!... but not on TVN

So, it's the 3rd preseason game and yet WTVN is not carrying the preseason games. Why? It did not necessarily conflict with Soccer either. I thought if you got the rights to the broadcast, you were required to carry them all?

I don't believe 610 WTVN carried the pre-season games last year either. There was Crew soccer at 4:00 today - they could have joined the football coverage in progress once the soccer ended - but they did not. In previous years, they have also cut short some of the pre-game or post-game coverage during the regular season. Meanwhile 103.9 (Steelers) and 105.7 (Browns) seem to offer full coverage of their respective teams each year. It would seem as though 610 does not put a real high priority on the Bengals, but I cannot remember a time when they did not carry all of the regular season games. Historically, has a different station ever carried the Bengals in central Ohio?

I know the Steelers aired on 1460 back in the mid to late 90’s and the old Browns were on 1460 before leaving Cleveland at the end of the 1995 season. Both have been on FM here in Central Ohio for some time.

I always thought 610 would take the Browns radio coverage when the new team came back in 1999 – the Browns have also seemed to be the more popular team in this area and it would make sense for them to be on the more highly rated (and powerful ) station. The signal is also directional towards the north (non-daylight), which seems perfect for the Browns. I will admit my Steelers most likely come in # 3 in central Ohio - but it seems as though I see more Black and Gold fans here over the last decade as people migrate to Columbus from eastern Ohio – I am just happy that they remain on 103.9!

I was kinda praying the black and gold would be moved over to The Blitz since 103.9 was no longer sports/talk, but beggers can't be choosers. Lol

As long as I can remember, at least 20 years, 610 NEVER has caried Bengals preseason games. This was understandable when they had rights to the Reds for many years. Back when 550 WKRC had the Bengals rights, you could not hear preseason games on the radio around here, nor where they televised any closer than Dayton. We didn't get Browns preseason games either.
Now that 1530 carreis the Bengals, if 700 has the Reds at least you can hear the broadcasts on skywave as well as see them on Channel 6 or wherever.
Haven't seen anything about 1230 carrying the Bengals, but that would suck. Terrible signal. Can't imagine why CC would banish the Bengals to that signal.

103.9 still carries the Steelers? I thought that'd go away when they dumped talk/sports...

Pre-season is odd around here, mostly due to baseball conflicts. Browns "AM Flagship" WTAM/1100 doesn't join up until after the Indians season is over. In Akron, Rubber City Radio moves the Browns from WAKR/1590 to WONE/97.5 for the same reason, though they occasionally bump the Indians for Ohio State. They promote WONE as "Akron's FM Home for the Browns", but I don't believe they run the Browns on 97.5 during the regular season.

In Canton, I heard the last Browns pre-season game on WHBC-FM/94.1, probably the same situation as 1480 is the usual carrier there, and also carries the Indians.

I miss the days when the Reds were on wtvn before they got on the disposable 1230.

It's not like 610 is worth a damn after 7pm anymore lol.

Yes - The Steelers are still on 103.9 WTDA FM (they have been there since 2007).

I just didn't know if the Steelers had survived the format change from "Talk FM".

It certainly still fits...lots of FM music stations, even in affiliate markets, carry NFL teams.

An earlier poster said they thought the Bengals would be on 1230 WYTS instead of 610 WTVN this season. It looks like they were right - at least according to today's Dispatch Sports section:

Sunday highlights
Sport Time Event TV Radio
NFL 1 p.m. Cincinnati-New England Ch. 10 WYTS 1230
Cleveland-Tampa Bay WBWR 105.7
Atlanta-Pittsburgh Ch. 28 WTDA 103.9
4 p.m. Green Bay-Philadelphia Ch. 28
8:15 p.m. Dallas-Washington Ch. 4 WBNS 97.1

And they were on 1230 today. I don't get this at all ... why not only move the Bengals to that puny signal, but also bump the Reds to nowhere? Keep the Bengals on 610 and the Reds on 1230.

This shows a few things
1. Since the Reds are synonamous with 700 WLW, I guess people at CC Columbus assume people will just tune there to get the Reds anyway.
2. They want to make sure they get all the paid weekend programming on TVN, and between the Bengals and Buckeye coverage on Saturdays they couldn't do that, so Bengals get relegated to 1230.
3. They weren't expecting the Reds to be this good when they made the innitial plans, so they didn't think it'd matter.

I see where you're coming from, but if No. 1 is in the minds of CC brass why are there Reds affiliates in markets like Dayton or Columbus where WLW has a decent to strong signal 24/7?

More so to make sure no other station has a chance to get them IE, The Fan, The Blitz, Etc.

The Reds are way more important than the Bengals. :D Go Reds.

Bengals probably got pushed off because the Sunday lineup on 'TVN has improved.
