the best radio station is in opelousas.103.7

So let me get this straight, they'll play Holst's "Mar's," and then Montrose's "Rock Candy..." AND then announce that I have 4 washing machines and a transmission on the porch of my double-wide I'm willing to sell cheap.
That's cool, man!
Sounds good to me!!!
;) ;D

Is that an LPFM? 'Cause I m in Crowley and I can't pick up anything on 103.7

Yes, it is an LPFM ran by the Southern Development Foundation, the same folks who have the Zydeco fest nearby each year: http://www.zydeco.org/

A bit of background: The station was assembled by Prometheus Radio http://www.prometheusradio.org , a group who advocates for local ownership and LPFM supports community groups in getting a station, they sometimes select a station for a “Barn Raising” where they and several volunteers come in and assemble a station, usually in one weekend. Here’s a story done on the Opelousas station back when it was built: http://oldsite.prometheusradio.org/barn_acadiana_story.shtml

Last I knew the station played only Zydeco, Soul, R&B, Blues etc. They don’t play ANY request now do they?

Speaking of 103.7 why is the Lake Charles station there so weak, did Rita knock em down?
(and I miss KGRA Nova104, the name they had when 103.7 was built in the mid 70s - that was a good station)

The LC station (KBIU) ain't weak, they are just not there!!!! .. They moved frequencies to 103.3 pre-rita and went down from a c1 on 103.7 to a c2 on 103.3 to help move KUST 103.7 fron Conroe/Huntsville,Tx. area to become KIOL, a C class rimshot for LaPorte,Tx (a Houston suburb) that happens to put a signal into Lake Charles.

Both stations are owned by Cumulus so it made things way easier to do...

The Opelousas station KOCZ-LP 103.7 runs 72 watts ERP at 115 feet HAAT ... Basically the signal doesn't leave St. Landry parish but got pretty good coverage thru Opelousas on I-49 and US 190.

Actually, this station travels about 15 miles...I sometimes question how much power they are really pushing.

A station can carry pretty far if it doesn't have to much interference from other stations in the area... Plus tropo ducting helps.. that's why the station may cover more distance some days for.

Also fun little fact that applies to south Louisiana due to the land gradually going from Hilly in the north to flat coastal in the south..... the stations signal will actually travel further than listed south of the station as the elevation changes (goes lower in elevation) and technically makes the tower taller than it actually is giving it theoretically a little more distance (Fm line of sight principle)

KOCZ is mainly a R&B and Zydeco station as ButtonPusher described and is definitely a local station for Opelousas and the area's Black Community. At least this is a real LP station IMO, than some other LPFM's I've heard in West Louisiana aimed at the African American community.

Gosh, I haven't heard Nova 104 mentioned in YEARS! When I worked at KBIU, they had loads of old Nova 104 sales kits and rate cards in the back, the logo was, of course, a sunburst of orange on a black background with the right slant of the "v" protruding. I always wondered how Al and Dixie got N-O-V-A out of K-G-R-A...

The story as I remember it, is KGRA was chosen by the owner, Spook Stream, in honor of his brother Gray who died in a car wreck.

It was a unique station that would probably fit closest into the AAA format box if were alive today. The PD/MD went by the name Zorick, another announcer went by Sky.

A guy named DC did many of the spots (I think he wrote them) that were creative and set a mood, they weren’t IN-YOUR-FACE like many radio ads often are. He’s still around according to a guy I spoke with at an art exhibit down there recently. Zorick left Nova to program KATT in OKC when it was starting up, that station was really good too and similar to Nova 104.

I lived in LC in ‘77 for several months working at a local audio store, Nova was one of the things that attracted me to LC. I only stayed 6months and came back to Monroe, but listened to Nova with a tall FM antenna before and after living in LC. I don’t recall when they died and changed to KBIU.

I still have some cassettes of Nova104 and had them out a few months ago, they still sound good. I copied portions of them into my PC and at the time I was looking around for an aircheck site they could be posted to… I still have some of their round bumper stickers with the logo you described..
