The boston pops concert of the 4th : Not ready for prime time

This is a case of The Emperor's New Clothes.
Everyone is afraid to say the truth: The Boston Pops Esplanade Concert on the 4th sucked.

With the one exception of Michael Cavanaugh the rest of the talent was no talent at all.

The Sons of Serendip were off pitch and sang songs that didn't fit their genre. The other singers were totally out of pitch and either singing behind or ahead of the orchestra.

Even Keith Lockhart [ hey, try a salad once in a while or get a larger cummerbund...] looked like he was just going through the motions.

Maybe, it is time for the Pops to pass the baton to another group that cares 'cause clearly the Pops Organization gave up on this concert years ago.

The PBS Capitol Fourth is a class act. The Pops concert is an act without class.

I posted this on New England TV and it was moved.
Which Forum is this ??
Again, looks like The Boston Pops did this on the CHEAP.
Community Auditions talent would have been better than these out of tune singers. Ugh !

Review of Boston Pops 4th Of July TV Coverage

[ Trust since there is no "Boston TV" Forum this is the appropriate place to post ]

While Channel 4's coverage of the Boston Pops Esplanade Fourth of July Concert was about as good as it gets with hosts who didn't get in the way of the music it seems to me that The Capitol Fourth on PBS always gets better entertainers and singers. With the exception of new comer, Michael Cavanaugh, who sang the songs of Billy Joel as well as played the piano the rest of the talent was slightly out of tune. That included " The Sons of Serendip" whose rendition of a Katie Perry song was a selection not in their comfort zone and it showed and sounded it. The other singers were totally forgettable and had major pitch problems. Later watched the PBS Capitol Fourth and with the exception of a truncated 1812 Overture [ why bother if you only play the first 8 bars] the song selections and the talent were all exceptional. Seems to me the Boston Pops is running this on a shoe string and it is showing: limited talent who they can get on the cheap and a song selection that was never consistent with the theme of the evening - celebration of the 4'th. The Boston Pops organization really needs to sit down and take a good hard look at the whole production. Keith Lockhart sort of telegraphed the inability to get really named talent this year when he was not out publicizing the named talent they had lined up for the concert. American may " have got talent" but few ever appear on the Boston Pops Esplanade concert. Would give the whole concert a 'gentleman's "C". Needs improvement but a strong B to WBZ TV production values.

At least Boston's mayor Walsh wasn't attempting to rap to "Rapper's Delight". You had that with Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter. They had The Roots do a medley of the Actions News "Move Closer To Your World" theme song. You'd recognize the song if you heard a few seconds of it. The coverage was from WPVI-TV (ABC) channel 6.

The Boston POOPs -- No wonder CBS dumped them, except in Boston of course.

It's been downhill ever since Keith Lockhart took over.

Yes, he is no John Williams and Arthur Fiedler must be decomposing... ;-)

The boston pops esplanade concert - a disaster

Last night CBS WBZ TV 4 broadcast a disaster of a Fourth of July Concert. Demi Lovato was dressed like she was going to do a strip act next. Her attempt to sing Prince's RAIN was an abomination. Not to mention the ugly skin head Nick Jonas who looked and sounded like he wanted to be anywhere but there.

Kieth Lockhart should be embarrassed that he sold out the Boston Pops to get a pre-pubescent audience. It is supposed to be a patriotic tribute to the birth of our country - not a rock concert.

The Boston Pops should be renamed, "The Boston Poops" after this disaster.

It this concert disappears next year it will not be missed. The PBS " A Capitol Fourth " is the one to watch. A class act all the way with real talent.

Shame on CBS and WBZ for foisting this garbarge on the viewing public on The Fourth of July.

Actually, with Lovato and Jonas you're more likely to get women in their 20s and even 30s watching. The pre-pubescent crowd has long since moved on from both.

"A Capitol Fourth" used stock fireworks footage Monday night from previous years without attributing that it was recorded. That is not classy either.

So you want commercial TV to do what PBS does? Really? How long have you been watching TV?

When was the last time ANY commercial TV network gave any prime time visibility to a symphony orchestra?

I congratulate CBS on doing something that no commercial network would do.

Yes they made some compromises but that's the deal today.

I might say both PBS and CBS did what they did to attract viewers. The Macy's fireworks program in the past, has had pre-taped musical performances.
A&E used to televise the Boston Pops 4th for many years. Bravo Network had artistic programming. Now it's real housewives. Classic Arts Network is available to some viewers.
It's like an old Ed Sullivan Show. You have to watch The Rolling Stones to see Vladimir Horowitz later.; or vice versa depending on your own musical preferences.

The bastards sold their soles. I've been watching it since the 70's when it was on A&E and then WCVB. Each year since it has come under the claws of CBS it has become more embarrassing each year. Time for it to fade to black and for Pudgy Keith Lockhard to have a salad once in a while...

What do you expect. It is Washington D.C. [ Deception Capitol ].

That's what happens with voice control sometimes. Tries one's " soul ". ;-)

I've got a suggestion, don't watch it.
