The Bull Fires Two-Thirds of "New" Morning Show

Rodney Ho is reporting that 94.9 The Bull has fired Brian Moote and Kimmie Caruba from "the new Bull morning show." Otis will do the show solo for now.

Rodney wrote that in the February PPM, The Bull had a 2.2 share in mornings while New Country 101-5 had a 4.4 share of the total 6+ audience.

The New Country 101-5 morning show with J.J. Kincaid and Dallas McCade is indeed loaded with talent. But the same can be said about The Bull's morning show. I personally thought Brian, Kimmie and Otis sounded terrific and had good chemistry. Brian is so talented that I doubt he'll have trouble finding something though it probably will be in another market.

96.1 has a one day delayed Morning show. I bet the iHeart Atlanta sales folks are really happy.

My best guess is they will not go down the "bones" route or they would have already switched.

I doubt it since they air an evening Bobby Bones show at 7PM.

The current SVP Programming, Meg Stevens, hasn't had a whole lot of ratings success there.
The crappy Bell Media-owned country station in Windsor, Ontario (across the border from Detroit) airs both the morning show and the more music-oriented evening show.

So, never say never!

I frankly don't get what the uproar is all about.

Complaining about iHeart airing Bobby Bones on all their country stations is like complaining about NBC and CBS running Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert on all of their affiliates.

Bones IS moving to mornings in April. The evening clearance is just that, a clearance. Atlanta will become Bones' largest market when the show launches and if you pay attention to other stories I've written over the past two weeks there's a game afoot that also includes another company that is launching an internal morning show that could cost Bobby a number of his current affiliates. If you look at the talent cuts made over the past 7 days, you'll see a few other markets where Bobby will be added or bumped up from nights.

Well, if that's the case, Cumulus will have 2 local morning shows competing against 2 syndicated morning shows in this market.

Is the "other company" Alpha, or is it Townsquare?

Townsquare's syndicated shows generally air on only small market and perhaps a few medium market stations. Any ranked markets that carry such programming are almost exclusively Townsquare's own stations. Their new syndicated morning show for country radio ("Taste of Country Mornings") has already launched, if I'm not mistaken.

Although the two Cumulus shows are also syndicated. They just happen to originate in Atlanta.
You're right. Kincaid & Dallas recently joined The Bert Show in syndication. But aside from starting in Atlanta, both shows contain short segments on which the talent talk about things relevant to just Atlanta, such as station ticket giveaways. To the listener, the shows come across as local shows.

Well, they have officially announced that Bobby Bones will be carried in mornings and that Otis, who was retained from the morning show, will take over evenings.

A couple of things:

1. Otis is the PA announcer at the Braves games, most of which are in the evening. So apparently his show will be voice-tracked at least on those dates. Not that the average listener can tell the difference, but it will of course limit interaction with the audience.

2. I haven't seen any research so I'm going just by my own judgment, but I think the better move would have been to put Otis (back) in PM drive and shift Kristen Gates to nights. I always thought Kristen was a natural in mornings, but I think Otis is the stronger personality for a music shift. Again, just my opinion and not based on any facts.

Otis is one of the primary national Country voicetrackers for iHeart. I'd expect that he'll always be tracked at night.

And to clarify, he isn't the PA announcer, but the "in-game host" doing segments between innings.

iHeart has been launching more multi-person afternoon shows across the country. The expectation (and could still possibly happen) is that Otis joins Kristen in afternoons.

Given we're talking about evenings, I agree he'll always be voice-tracked. But Angie Ward is also one of the primary iHeart voice-trackers--middays on KVET, WKKT, WTQR, WNCB and WPGB, and on the iHeart Custom team--and she's live as can be in middays on The Bull.

@RoddyFreeman Now we know the rest of the story....

Otis is also now APD/afternoon host at Power 96.1. Starting next Monday on-air.

Wow, that's interesting. The first station I heard him on was a CHR, Kiss in Charlotte.

Any word on what's up with Ethan Cole, whom Otis is succeeding in PM drive? I thought Ethan was very good. As I'm sure you know, he's voice-tracked shifts on other stations, including nights on Channel 93.3 in San Diego. And he's done weekend shifts on Z100.

Still trying to find that out. He's still on San Diego's website but has been purged from Atlanta and Hits 96.1 Charlotte where he was also hosting afternoons.

iHeart announced The Bobby Bones Show will become the morning drive program on not just WUBL Atlanta but also WGAR Cleveland and WACO Waco. Several DJs have been cut from those stations.

Some markets where iHeart owns a Country station still have their own morning shows. I guess they have demonstrated that their local wake-up program is getting enough sponsors to justify staying, with Bones heard in the evening in most cases. I noticed WCOS-FM Columbia SC only runs Bones on Saturday evenings, not even weeknights.

iHeart only has three country stations in the Top 10 markets: WUBL Atlanta, WMZQ Washington and WBWL Boston are or will be carrying Bones in mornings.

I wonder how much longer it’s going to be until iHeart gets Bones in AM drive in Greenville-Spartanburg. They have two country stations, and he’s heard on WSSL at night. I don’t know if iHeart would put him on a country formatted station like WESC.
