Although there is at this writing (1 A.M. EST February 20th) no press release about it yet posted on NBC's "Media Village" website (chances are, a release will be posted on the site sometime on Monday), NBC announced on-air during Sunday's (February 19th) prime-time Olympic coverage that former Pittsburgh Steelers' star Jerome "The Bus" Bettis will be joining Bob Costas and Cris Colinsworth on NBC's Sunday-night NFL pregame/halftime show.
Bettis was in Turin/Torino (perhaps it was there where he signed his contract with NBC) and was interviewed by Costas during the prime-time Olympic coverage. Most of the interview dealt with Bettis' impressions on the Winter Games; it was only revealed late in the interview that Bettis would be joining Costas and Collinsworth. Costas joked that the Bettis was being offered the position because Bettis "needed a job".
My impression of Bettis during that interview: He is a "work in progress", but also has potential. I'm sure he will be working to improve his on-air skills between now and September, and might be a good complement to Costas and Collinsworth.
