How come you waited just after I logged off to lose it - damn, I wish I had stayed for meltdown #5, because NUMB3RS was a repeat ! We will have to work on meltdown #6 !

When I was in college my broadcast statistics class did a poll of 1,000 people on radio listening in cars. One stat that jumped out at us all was the large drop in radio listening in cars with CD players. It wasn't that pronounced for cars with cassette decks.

That was 15+ years ago. I can only imagine what it's like today with ipods, satellite radio, etc.

I think in the long run AM and FM stations are going to have to go back to basics to survive. By "basics" I mean localism. Local DJs taking requests. Locally produced news, weather, sports and talk programming. These voicetracked stations won't cut it. Satellite delivered talk and sports progrmaming on AM and FM won't cut it. Radio station owners need to think long and hard about the future before it's too late to save it.

Making the stations sound better with HD radio will probably help some, but the station owners are going to have to convince the consumer that there's something worth listening to in order to get them to pay to upgrade to HD.
