First, take a deep breath and stop shouting. KJUL was not even in the top 20 in 25-54, the sales demos.

A radio operator can not subsist if the product they are offering has no advertiser appeal. All the listeners, for practical purposes, were over 65. There is essentially no major advertiser that uses radio to reach this demo.

Beasley lasted longer in the format than anyone in the industry thought they would. Billings have been declining, and KJUL was thier lowest billing FM station, and it billed so low last year that it is questionable whether they covered basic costs.

Radio as an industry and radio management and sellers can not make clients desire an audience that their product, goods or services is not designed for. Unfortunately, those who do market to seniors tend to use specialized magzazines, direct mail, couponing, etc., instead of radio... becasue it is more effective in that demo.

You are blaming the wrong people here. There is no greed. Again, Beasley suported the fomrat longer than they should have and should be complimented on what they did do for many years. Things change.

Oh, and I am sure you know, but everyone is not going to XM or Sirius. The total subscriber base of boht services is less than the total cume of the top 3 radio stations in New York City... three stations in one market reach more people than satellite. However, satellite is the perfect venue for this kind of format that can not be advertiser supported on terrestrial radio.

Hello David, but do those top three stations generate $64,750,000 in revenue per month the way XM is? Which is $777,000,00 million a year! That is if they are really getting $12.95 per month, per subscriber. And I do realise that it took tons of money to launch the service in the first place that needs to still be recovered. Just look at the money XM will be making if they get to say 20 million paying subscribers per month thats $259,000,000.00 per month. Who cares if they reach the same audience size of the top 3 radio stations in New York City? Thats not what its about for them its about paying subscribers and thats all! That's not counting the ad revenue the commerical channels are generating either! Your comparison is of little concern to the owners of XM Satellite Radio management or the investors either I would bet! And I do realise that there is going to be a lot of other competitors to the satellite radio services. But 20 millions subs would make them quite happy I'm sure!

No, and they do not generate $400 million dollars a year in losses. (The actual revenue figures are lower than what you state, as many contracts are discounted since they come with new cars where the dealer and manufacturer get a cut).

The three radio stations together make more money than XM can hope to make for the next half-decade, perhaps.

They get nowhere near that... especially in the new car installs.

They need around 12 million to make money, so they are about half way in 4 years. Give them another 5, and they will make money if they are around that long... other technologies could threaten them.

Which is reported to be less than $1 million a year. They have very little real AQH audience.... for example, XM in LA has about a o.2 share, good for 77th in the market.

The fact is they have a different business model, based on fringe and niche formats and a certain small gorup of potential listeners. It actually complements terrestrial radio in some ways.

Between the two companies, that would just barely make them profitable.

Slow down...remember radio stations are businesses. If you owned a business and there was a chance to make more income you'd adjust and change the business. Yes, JUL had ratings...but no one wants to buy a 55 to death radio station. It's just business..not greed.

I'll be honest I liked JUL..especially around Christmas. Old Xmas songs are just better than anything else during the holiday season.

That's why I expect Sunny will be huge for the Fall book. They always do great with holiday music and this year will have the "Christmas bonus" of not having to share/compete with Lite or KJUL.

Re: Needless exaggeration.

Amen, David. People, educate yourself. "Everyone" is not going to satellite radio...Keep your eyes open y'all...you may be witnessing the pet rock, beta and 8-tracks all rolled up into one...and it goes by the name XM (or Sirius)
