The Doghouse with JV and Elvis WFNY 92.3 Free Fm

I have noticed that "The Doghouse" has gotten a stronger and stronger following. I was wondering what other thought of this show. I was at the Yankee game a few weeks back and someone shouted out "Doghouse" and a large of people replied "Whaaatttt". So I would really believe that they are starting to grow a fairly large following. All the best

I for was a long time Stern listener. I loved the Stern show, but decided not to follow him into the Pay to listen world. I decided to give Free Fm a shot, but DLR destoryed that idea. I was listening after DLR and found that I really like the JV and Elvis show. Well that was back in Jan and I still listen all the time. I have heard others talking about the show and I do believe that they have a strong following. Everyone can like something different. I for one am not the biggest fans of O & A, but they have a big following.

You know what I do not understand about CBS, it's the fact that The Doghouse was Number 1 in SF for 10 years. So why did FreeFm not run the show on Both Coasts? I have heard from a large number of SF Doghouse fans that they still love the show. They had a Major following in the SF, CA area. Why not go with whay works. Just a thought

One thing that I think is a problem for the show is they are getting to serious. I know they make me laugh 90% of the time, but they have gotten into some really serious stuff of late. JV and Elvis, just be yourselves...Make us laugh in the morning. Overall the show is the best I have listened to in sometime. 92.3 should be happy they have them.

Early on this station is alright. After Penn Jillette's show, it's worthless. First with The Radio Chick, who has failed in a million other places and does not fit at all with the general listener base of the station. Then, with the grade school juvenilia of Booker, followed by Jake & Jackie.

My suggestion to K-Rock is this: If the ratings during these time slots are not strong, start rockin' from 3 PM to 6 AM on weekdays. And go with more of a WYSP type sound instead of what you have now, which sounds an awful lot like WAXQ with a few currents mixed in.

Soul,

I agree with you about everything. However Booker is no longer with 92.3 and Jake and Jackie were cancelled at least a month ago. The line-up is strong in the morning until 1pm. Then they go to Cramer, who does not fit the station( wall street stuff) and Penn sorry again does not fit this station. As for the "Chick" I have no idea what the hell that show is about. I just do not get it at all. I have to say The Doghouse with JV and Elvis is a better show then O&A, but I know they area loves those guys(o&A)

It seems all the time I tune in now, talk, talk talk, weekend and overnights too! when the hell is their rock?
I just want music (dammit!)

Jamie,

I agree. They need to add more rock or music. They should be talk from 6am-1pm and then go to rock or music. Then go to a Rock or Music DJ for afternoon drive. They once had that in Booker. However he has jumped ship. I think most people want something to laugh about on the morning drive. So that is why I think The Doghouse with JV and Elvis fits so well here and back in SF, CA where they were Number 1 for many years.

In regards to serious discussion as opposed to the jocular tone of the Dog House, Jv is a very spiritual person and he is "being himself" when he talks about religion, politics or what not.

I am from SF and am very glad to hear that they have a nice cult-like following. They, in my opinion have toned it down. Their old producer Hollywood would make the show even better, no offense to Lou, the current producer.

Free FM, at least in NY has something to build on with O and A and then The Dog House...

WHAAAAAT!

Are they officially going back to the name "The Doghouse"? When they signed on, I know there was some kind of dispute over the name.

Does anyone know who took the place of Booker and Jake & Jackie? I know Booker surrounded himself with a few former K-Rock personalities, and if they are stilll on, I'm expecting sophomoric humor during that time slot. Whatever the case is, I guess that NYC's Free-FM isn't rocking from evenings on through 6 AM. Which is a shame, because people in NYC and all of its suburbs have no Rock stations to choose from, unless they want to hear tired Classic Rock or some dull station that plays about 80% Classic Rock and 20% safe newer rock music, like WDHA or WBAB.

Yes, they are now known as "The Doghouse with JV & Elvis".

As of right now, there is no real replacement for Booker and Jake & Jackie. Right now, they play "Free Rock" (rock from the past 40 or so years) and different DJs from the Free Rock Weekends do the weeknights of Free Rock from 7p-3a or so.

Booker is doing morning drive in the Philly the #6 market. I am not sure that was smart moving from the number 1 market to the #6 market. I know he was pissed that they did not give him the morning drive at WFNY, but to tell you the truth The Doghouse should have gotten before O and A. CBS is not doing anything for these guys at all. They are making the show happen all by themselves. O and A have tv ads, Radio Chick has ads all over the city. First of all The Chick has failed here a number of times and I do not understand that at all. Hello CBS you have great team in JV and Elvis, DO SOMETHING WITH THEM.

I started listening to DLR when Stern moved. I hated every second of the show. I had never heard of JV and Elvis, so I thought what the hell listen, could they be and worse then DLR. Well to my surprise they were 1 Million times better then DLR and I have to say it. They are better then Stern. I know they always say they respect Stern, but guys you are better. Maybe CBS will wake up and see what they have, before it is too late and another Major station in NY goes after the Doghouse.

.....

1) AM Drive in Philly > Night in New York, especially considering Q102 is the heritage Top 40 in Philly AND FNY was a sinking ship when Booker was in negotiations for the Philly job. As I remember, he left right before O&A came in.

He probably got a very nice raise, and he's still within quick driving distance to Market 1 in a TV gig pops up. Plus, his face is all over billboards in Philly, something he never got even when he was doing AM drive with CBS radio on WNEW.

2) Your idea that the Doghouse should have gotten the morning slot before O&A makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. O&A have a proven track record of success in MANY of the markets they were coming into, (Philly, Cleveland, Boston, NYC, etc.) where JV and Elvis only had success in San Francisco.

This is NOT pissing on the Doghouse, but if you're Joel Hollander and your job is potentially on the line, you go with the crew that you know brings success, rather than an unknown commodity.

As for "Booker being pissed" - are you talking initially before DLR came in, or when DLR left and O&A got the job?

I would be annoyed if I did mornings in NYC and then someone with no radio experience got the job, but if I was on a low-rated show and then O&A were on-deck, I'd understand completely.

As for "Booker being pissed" that was before they hired Roth. Booker had the afternoon drive and was well liked at K-Rock. Now as for him doing well in Philly. This is from The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Booker back

Q102 morning host Booker returned Friday from a couple days' rest and relaxation. The station won't comment on his absence, during which DJ-less music played. Word is that Booker was upset at the volume of the hip-hop from sister station Power 99 that could be heard in the hallway. Booker, who is white, intimated on the air that he was uncomfortable walking over to ask the Power crew to turn it down - suggesting that sidekick Diego go in because "you're Spanish." The station, meanwhile, is looking for a female sidekick to replace Lisa Paige, who's gone back to middays.

Ok now on to O & A. The real question here is what they paid them to come to 92.3 and what it will cost in the future. They are doing free ads for XM each and everyday. Last book did not look like they did much for the station. up .1 to 1.5 and this is a station that was doing 5+ with Stern all the time and even higher at times. I understand that people know O & A in the NY area, but many of those that follow listen to them on XM. I see it all the time, and they are pissed about it. I can understand that they have a bigger splash, but if I owed the station I would be looking for the future. So I look at The Doghouse who happen to be #1 in SF for 10 years, have a major following in SF( which also happens to be the #4 Market in the country) and I might take the chance. Please don't get me wrong I know what you are saying about proven, but #1 in the #4 market for 10 years. I am not 100% sure, but I don't think O & A have ever been #1 in any market( but I might be wrong). All the best

You're using the 12+ numbers for the entire station. You're also using numbers that still have Roth numbers in them, as O&A do not have a full book "on their own" yet.

Just as many people didn't follow Stern to Sirius, many didn't follow O&A to XM. The ratings have been showing growth, as shown by the ad buys, guests, etc. that have been O&A. They wouldn't get on Letterman if they weren't doing well.

A small faction of people are pissed about the CBS deal, but if you talk to a majority of O&A listeners, they love the new show, especially the replays.

We really can't dissect how O&A are doing until FNY shakes it out and decides if it's a talk station or a music station. We also need a few more books with O&A.

O&A have been #1 in NYC, Philly, and Boston during their last tour of duty on CBS. They also have more name recognition and infamy than JV and Elvis.

Sorry, it just doesn't wash. 9 times out of 10, even with the most ardent O&A haters, they would pick O&A to anchor their station over an unknown.

Stars,

I do believe that this book was without DLR's numbers. With that said, I agree with you that O & A should be the morning drive in NY, Boston, Philly. However the rest of the markets they are the unknown. Dallas ( I was in Dallas not that long ago and people hate them), West Palm, Cleveland, and in SF they are way behind "The Doghouse". Corolla's numbers suck so they need to look at that and fix it out on the west coast. I think the Free FM stations should do the talk thing until 1pm and then go to music that fits the station models. Then do an afternoon drive with music as it was in the K-Rock days. Really makes you wonder what CBS is doing? Bring "The Doghouse" from SF to NY, ok and then put O & A on tape delay in SF. When something is broken you need to fix it. Corolla is broken as are many of the other Free Fm stations. Time to work together as a Company( CBS) and fix the problem. SF has be screaming they want the Doghouse, well let them have them for Morning Drive and Leave them here from 9am-1pm and PROMOTE THEM!!!!!
