Morning drive in NYC = not too shabby.
Syndicated throughout the country and on XM = not too shabby
Personally, I'm not compelled to keep listening, but I respect what they've been able to accomplish.
Same goes for the Doghouse - I haven't been excited by their content lately, but respect their success in SF, and the fact that they've convinced CBS to give 'em a shot in NYC.
Both shows could benefit from a bit of humbling and a return of the energy which helped launched their success. Both shows appear to have fallen victim to their egos.
The difference that I see is that The Doghouse was Number 1 for 10+ years in SF. O & A can claim that in any market, for 10 years. So I give the respect to JV and Elvis. Middays and Morning Drive are different worlds, I think O & A know this and know how hard it is to do good in NY. They always talk about Howard taking the money, but that is what they did also coming back to the company that fired them and made sure they were out of radio for 2 years.
Tony -
I am really getting sick of the misinformation and other crap you're spreading in this thread.
1) O&A didn't get work for 2 years because they were still under contract. The only way CBS would let them out of their contract is if they signed away the right to talk about Stern and CBS and what happened during sex for sam. If they mentioned any of those three things, CBS could come after them.
O&A were offered a small-to-medium market rollout by Citadel, but they didn't want that, because they knew their bread and butter was in NYC, Boston, and Philly. So they explored XM and Sirius.
As for NYC stations that were going to pick up O&A when they came back... the only possible option in October 2004 was Q104. Don't act like there was a ton of possibilities that O&A could broadcast from in NYC. There wasn't.
2) The reason why O&A can't lay claim to being #1 in the same market for 10 years is because they have never been in the same market for 10 years. Hell, they've only been actively broadcasting as a team for about 10 years... They were in Long Island for a few years, then Boston, then New York, then the 2 year hiatus, then XM/CBS for the past two.
However, they CAN lay claim to being #1 in NYC, Boston, and Philly. Sorry, your boys can't do that.
3) O&A don't have a loyal fanbase on XM. Right.
If O&A weren't successful, and didn't create a buzz...
- XM wouldn't have them under contract for the next three years
- CBS wouldn't have spent MORE money to put the O&A show in place. They would have gone with something else. CBS isn't afraid to pull the plug on a massive money loser. Blink is an example of this. They saw O&A as a way to turn things around, SINCE THEY HAVE A PROVEN TRACK RECORD.
- Citadel, who has nothing to lose, SYNDICATED O&A AS WELL!
Tony, you are forgetting that most radio personalities are ego-driven. Opie said multiple times on XM that this "wasn't over" until their voices were heard on WNEW again. He didn't get WNEW, but I think broadcasting from K-Rock in Howard's old studio is good enough.
Stop with the heresay, conjecture, and other BS that you're trying to spread in order to show that JV&E is the superior show. It's NOT going to work.
