"THE DUDE"? Can anyone tell us what the story is with this Columbia station?

"THE DUDE"? Can anyone tell us what the story is with this Columbia station?

Stumbled across it this weekend - had never heard it - or heard of it. Anyone know anything or have any thoughts?

Re: "THE DUDE"? Can anyone tell us what the story is with this Columbia station?

In my opinion it's just another station run by people who don't have enough money to compete. I do not think The Dude will abide long.

It is just a repacked version of the classic country they were already doing. But the only promotion they did was a couple of digital boards and sending out press releases that week. 94.3 has been so many different formats over the years that it would take a fortune in marketing to undo the damage. Not to mention, nothing they are doing can even dent WCOS.

Shh. Don't say anything negative about 94.3 and 92.1. Kirk Litton and Tom Davis will have the moderators yank anything negative down in 5 seconds.

It amazes me how many on these boards lament the lack of localism and diversity in radio.

Then, someone tries to be local and unique and promptly has not simply its programming critiqued (though, none of you have exactly proposed any real "fixes" to the issues you perceive with 92.1 and 94.3) but its management bashed.

How many of you posting have ever actually had charge over the business end of a radio station?

It sure sounds a HELL of a LOT better than when Tim Miller drove it even further into the ground than what it already was.

94.3 THE RIVER and Carolina 92.1 were the worst things ever to happen to those stations (besides Tim Miller being GM)

How he ever talked Bob Sherman into making those flips is beyond me.

A lot of people I know actually like and listen to "THE DUDE" I can't say I do as it's too broad of a range for my personal tastes. To hear something from 2013 and then the next song be something from the 70's is not my personal choice but from the people I know that listen to it, they like it.

And, I love how they call WCOS, 97.5 out by name in their promos. Way to have the balls to go after them. Probably won't make a dent but it's fun to see the David -VS- Goliath attempt.

Not completely fair. Folks criticize and moan regardless of whether the owner is "Local" or not. By the way "Hometown Columbia" is only slightly more local than Clear or Cumulus. The guy that moved here in July only has a 25% equity stake. As opposed to someone like Alex Snipe whose organization is 100% local.

And frankly, Double O deserved a fair amount of that criticism. It seemed like they were the gang that could not shoot straight.

To some extent, Tim had the right idea with 92.1. Poorly executed and skewed way too old, but a well programmed soft/lite AC would have eventually done well enough. Certainly, had it been refocused, it would be a 4+ share contender.

I think the reason why people gets so upset with what is going on is because it is the same ole' same ole'! It is like if someone buys your favorite burger joint. They come in and promise a better burger yet it is still the same burger and then the next owner comes in and says the same thing. You can only promise a better burger so much til people don't care. The same thing can be said about 92.1 and 94.3. The formats have changed so many times on those two stations that people don't care and us as radio insiders or geeks get's upset with the end result. What would be a good solution? It is simple give a format a chance to grow and don't change it every 9 months to a year. I would love to see a format that would take on both B106 and WNOK. I would love to see a good Rhythmic AC format come to Columbia. It would have to be High energy station but skew it older where it takes away the older demo of NOK and the younger end of B106. Females love that kind of music and if Hometown Columbia sales staff can sell it they could make some good money with it... With B106 doing the toilet bowl swirle this could shake things up a bit...
