I must admit I'm loving this show. Even though I kind of wish it was on KZZP or KZON or some other station that we don't have yet, I can think positively and be thankful that it at least came on another station outside of my already top two favorites in top 40/rhythmic hits. I am strongly hoping that other stations are noticing this and will eventually get the hint and jump on the bandwagon!
It is a bit ironic that of course, once again, the dance music somehow managed to find the rhythmic station with the weakest signal, and what makes it even more ironic is that it had to go to the least likely place for this to happen in order for the irony to unfold! It's sometimes funny to look at how things have changed as time passed over the past 10 - 12 years, and to see how different dance music of today is from what it used to be. Very different, yet many similarities. The Baltimore Club Sound seems to be the new thing that is taking the place of what booty house and booty bass used to be, then we have the new generation bass hits from artists like Will-I-Am and Flo Rida...etc. Then we have that new generation dance sound of the melodic song with the rap and the dance-styled sung hook for the chorus, still being done similar to how it was done back in the day with the euro style. I guess the only thing that keeps it from ever "being what it used to be" in many people's minds is the fact that the new artists are all mostly people who evolved in from another genre, while the dance artists of the past were more of just that - dance artists... and dance artists to begin with. That subconsciously gives them more authenticity towards the genre in the mind. Then, in addition to the new younger generation people not being as knowledgeable to the sound as the (now) older generation, you combine this with the fact that the new generation of sound has also changed (and people are usually resistant to change when they see something they already like as is), and of course it makes today's mainstream crossover dance artists seem to put the "art" in artificial. We (or too many of us) have already set our standards a bit too high on what dance music should be, based on our preconceived notions and past beliefs.
Well, I actually called in during the electro hip hop show on Power 98.3 fm and the on air hosts seems pretty cool, even though I still prefer that they didn't do what they did when it comes to the on-air personality for that show (you can see that entire topic in the #2 section, here: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,123618.0.html). I also still don't like the fact that they don't have a name for the show, so it kind of blends in with the 10 hours of mixes that proceeds it, but like I said before in that post, this is also beneficial because people will stay tuned in with a more open mind if unwarned that a dance (or "techno") show is beginning. It's also pretty smart that they always kick it off with one of the most "ghetto/hip hop" sounding electro dance songs, like "I'm the ish" or something like that before they REALLY get into it. Congratulations to Power 98.3. At least this is a start... Hopefully they eventually turn to sound like Power 106 in LA and let Dj Astonish along with two or three other dj's they have take over and let the remaining two that are horrible at mixing go. I'm not asking for all dance, but at least for the mixshows to become more "interesting" and "fun". Power 106 in LA has once again figured the formula out.
2009: A Whole New Generation of Sound Has Officially Come to Power 98.3! NOW, the question is; WHO'S NEXT?
