The end of an era: 98.7 Kiss Fm

This Sunday at midnight, what we've known for decades as 98.7 Kiss Fm will flip to ESPN. Sad...

Not true. The station going away is WBLS:

EMMIS also entered into a transaction to sell the intellectual property rights of KISS FM to YMF MEDIA, which is in the process of acquiring INNER CITY Urban WBLS and Gospel WLIB-A/NEW YORK.
 
So Tom Joyner is gone again from NYC. Deja Vu is gone from middays again. Shocker. Which station has more vaule to Emmis Kiss or Hot. Honeslty I think Hot should have been the one to go.
 
I'm not a fan of this PPM Crap. PPM is killing the Urban music Format. FM stations are going to Talk, News and Sports format and Urban Stations are getting hit hard. More Big Urban Stations will be leaving the air soon. Just Awful !!!!!

It sounds more like with the exception of two personalities, 98.7 Kiss Fm is history...

I dont like it either. This has been going on wayyy too long to the point where im getting sick to my stomach about it. :mad:
 
This is sad to happen to this station.
Instead of them getting "ESPN Radio" they should've put "Fox Sports Radio" on there. I'll tell you why. And you can listen if you want. Fox Sports Radio plays a lot of Urban/Urban AC music as Bumper Music after a commercial break (15 seconds to 1 minute-30 seconds) Especially at night and overnight. I can't promise they put this music for every Bumper music, but they do play quite a lot


As for "ESPN Radio" Saturday nights Mike Salk is on. He has a Two-Three Minute Feature "Wheel Of Sound" where he plays the best sound of the week. The music he plays behind this is Chinese Hip Hop Music (from the "Karate Kid" 2010-movie) Sometimes he does that twice a night. He's on 8pm-Midnight, sometimes 9pm-Midnight Saturday nights

Yes and no. PPM is forcing the stratified and segmented version of urban radio (Urban AC, Mainstream Urban, Urban Gospel) that has been existing since the post-Telecom Act to fade into the abyss. Instead it forcing urban stations to become 'full-service urban contemporary' stations that plays a little bit of everything (hip-hop, R&B, soul, gospel, and regional stuff). This is why in the Atlanta market, WVEE "V-103", has thrived so well in the post-PPM era while its competitors which are segmented versions of the urban format has made more changes and moves (in terms of programming and transmitter locations) in the past 4 years than any other short amount of time in the market's urban radio history. Similar situations now exist in San Francisco with KMEL and Kansas City with KPRS. I look at it like the big bang theory of urban radio, everything that separated has to come back together again to survive in the long term.

It's also made it a hell of a lot easier for sales to be consolidated and packaged on the revenue end for some station groups with only one signal to operate for this area of musical radio. I wouldn't be surprised if more segmented urban station clusters don't fall off or are sold off in the future.

People listen to ESPN radio for sports not music. That's Emmis whole purpose of doing a LMA with WRKS. It goes to show you how they are desperate for money. They are leasing their Los Angeles and New York stations. Their big markets where they lost alot of revenue. Same thing with Radio Ones KKBT. It was their money making machine. They spend more money on that station than any of their properties. Sad that Radio One didnt make a return on its investment. Hopefully Emmis can get their finances together.
 
To me, what is sad that most urban radio operators can't figure what audience to serve the most...18-34 or 25-54.

That is where dayparting coming into play. Most 18-24 years old aren't listening to the radio prior to 2pm in the day because they are either in school or working their jobs (which likely isn't in an office). Most 25-54 year olds are listening because they do more than likely have an office job or job where there is a possibility to listen to the radio during the day. It is possible and it's a lost art that can be successful in this screwed up and over segmented radio landscape.

So now, say like in D/FW, if you were operating KSOC/KBFB or KKDA-FM/KRNB, would you put the 18-34 station on the weaker signal station, and try to maximize revenues with the UAC stations on the stronger signal stations. Does the research show now that most kids listen to music on mp3 players. What would bring in the most money, OldSchool's format on 97.9 or 94.5 or KRNB's format on 105.7 or 104.5
 
I would say that it would make sense for them to have one, full-service urban, dayparted stick considering the cannibalization occurring in such as lower black population market like Dallas-Fort Worth with only 14% for Service Broadcasting. The heritage with the K104 brand would be strong enough for them to bill well with such as set up.
