The end of an era at WATR 1320 Waterbury

After 79 years on the air at 1320 WATR in Waterbury today is the final edition of The Polish Eagles Show with Laurie Hoxie. The show was started by Laurie's father when WATR signed on in 1934. Laurie's mother - Sophie Zembruski took over the show in 1969 after Sophie's husband had a stroke. And she continued to host the show until 2008. Starting next Sunday WATR will be airing Jimmy Sturr's Polka Program.

The Polish programming on a lot of stations in the Northeast that are in cities that have a predominate Polish population (e.g., Buffalo, Chicopee/Springfield, Waterbury, New Britain, etc.) are some of the highest rated programs on the stations! Marc, I'm sure you remember the Polish programming on 'NTY, & I was the engineer when 1440WBIS/Bristol programmed it's "Connecticut Stash" Polish show on weekends.

I was sad when John Jeski passed away several years ago. He had Polka Shows on 89.3 WRTC and WRYM 840 AM. His show on WRYM was the best Polka Show in my opinion. The show is not the same with the new hosts John Gladyz and his wife Bomigula (sic).

I was surprised and sad when Patti-Ann Jakubiak passed in October 2011. She had been the Polka host on 990-AM for more than 15 years. Although I never formally met her during my time at 990-AM, I did see her once circa 2000 at Shoprite in Bristol. The people who co-hosted the show with her continue the show Sundays 2PM-3PM on 990-AM.

Marc, are they broadcasting from the club or the station these days?
