Looks like a major shakeup could be on the way as R Communications' radio operations in the RGV are wrapping up:
After selling KJAV 104.9 and KVJY 840 back in 2017, now Super Tejano 102.1 and KURV 710 are headed to Leading Media Group -- which appears to be an offshoot of Monterrey's Grupo Multimedios. La Ley 102.5, Digital 101.5, and La Lupe 89.1 appear to be going in a different direction, being divested to Radio Ultra. This would leave R with just 95.3 KZSP and 92.7 KESO -- both of which would be without their originating stations. Appears that 95.3 and 92.7 have been off the air since late 2018 when their tower was deemed structurally unsound, but leases have been signed to get both stations onto a replacement tower soon.
A lot to follow: Will 102.1 still be where Tejano lives? If not, could KURV make its way to the FM dial, or could Grupo Multimedios plug in its "Classic" format and plug the Valley's adult hits/classic hits format hole? Will the stations headed to Radio Ultra continue to target U.S. audiences? And what's in store for the South Padre stations -- could EMF use 92.7 and 95.3 to make an entrance to the RGV, or could KEDT or UTRGV use the signals to bring NPR back?
