The end of UPN & WB in Tampa?

T

Rumors coming out of NYC say UPN and WB are going to merge into a new network called the CW. Apparently, CBS owned station (UPN 44 is owned by CBS) will become the station for the new network. This leaves WB38 (owned by Sinclair) without a network. What happens to their poor little local newscast?

It is all true and confirmed by CBS & Time Warner. WTTA will be alone in the world and will be like WXPX without any real programming or sold. They have the rest of this season and summer with the WB then in the fall the feed goes dark, I am going to miss the WB, but UPN... they should have just folded
______________

WTTA will go back to what it was before the WB gave it any life, and owner Sinclair is already in the process of phasing out the local/national hybrid newscasts in other markets, according to a recent discussion thread on the National Television board hosted here.

I remember when Channel 38 went dark in 1970 -- it had the call letters WSUN-TV!
The frequency must be jinxed.
______________

Re: Deja vu all over again

Theres hope for part of the day and evening.

For years, the Tampa Bay Lightning have had no over the air affilliate. As much as they love Sun Sports/FSN, the Bolts want an over the air home they can call their own for about 30-40 games per year. None of the other stations would commit because of their "network" obligations.

It also gives the Rays a little clout in case they would want to jettison Pax/i.

WTTA is also the home of SEC football and Basketball Games of the Week.

Re: Deja vu all over again

Lets not forget that network programming for stations like WB38 and UPN44 only takes up 2 of 24 hours in a day (except for Sunday with 3 and nothing on Saturday). I'm sure both stations will survive as MORE-TV 32 does now. All ya gotta do is fill it with a Tyra, Tony, Montel, or Judge/Court show. The problem is the re-branding a lot of UPN and WB stations across the country. Nuff said. As for the new net... good luck. What a stupid name.

Interesting that the Tampa market looks to have TWO true indy stations, both in the 30s UHF channels (32 & 38) and both owned by rather large TV station corporations. WMOR 32 is owned by Hearst-Argyle and 38 WTTA is owned by Sinclair.

Also, we have a UHF which is a network O&O but not affiliated with that network. WTOG is owned by CBS but will now be an affiliate of CW network. I agree, CW does sound like a stupid name. It just doesn't ring with the channel numbers...CW44...sounds like a Canadian station. But, I also thought UPN was a bad name for a network but have sort of gotten used to it. I thought Bright-House was a bad name at first, but I kind of like it now. Sure has a better ring to it than Time-Warner (too corporate) or Knowlogy (just stupid).

Just to make note that WTTA is only managed by Sinclair and luckily not owned. Maybe its owners will take over day to day operations of the station...
______________

Putting a radio spin on this, does Ch 38 still carry Chuck Harder on it's SAP second audio program channel?

WTTA is owned by Bay Television which is owned by David Smith, J Duncan Smith, Frederick Smith, Robert Smith, and Robert Simmons. Don't recognize the names? They control most of the shares of Sinclair. (SBGI)

"Dewars Profiles" - The Typical Chuck Harder Supporter:

3" Penis
45 I.Q.

What more can I say?

Speaking of radio, I'm sounding a bit like Howard Stern here ...

Time for some unpleasant truths about Chuck Harder

In the past week or so, far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far-Right radio howler Chuck Harder told his audience (all three of them) that he had to go to the emergency room for a massive kidney/bladder infection, where he was doped up with antibiotics and morphine.
That's right, morphine.
The last time I saw anyone get morphine was on a 1970's-vintage M*A*S*H episode, which itself retroed back another 25 years, back to the Korean War in the early 1950's.
Look, dudes, it's time for Chuck Harder to retire. He should have retired after his 1999 accident where he banged up his knees and ankles, but he just kept going. He's still at it, sort of, drooling on for two hours against the U.S. government in general and the Bush Administration in particular. He hasn't taken listener calls in almost a year; all he does is talk to elite "think-tankers" in Washington, D.C. and rather obscure authors and activists elsewhere.
No give-and-take; no lively banter; no opposing views.
"For The People"? Ha! Gimme a freakin' break!
In one sense, I have to admire his tenacity, his "stick-to-it-ivness." But this is getting ridiculous. Yes, yes, yes ... he has a message and it must be heard, but if you want to get the same thing, all you have to do is go to www.theamericancause.com (Pat Buchanan's Web site) and click to your heart's content.
Face it: Chuck Harder is redundant, a waste of valuable broadcast time, money, and energy. It's time for his TalkStar Radio Network buddies to do the right thing and give Chuck his golden watch and let someone younger (but just as controversial) take over. Why not Michael Savage? Or Neal Boortz? Or Jeff Rense? Hey, I'm all for free speech and freedom of expression. But I'm not for a really sick guy huffing and puffing and drooling his way through a two-hour radio program just because he has a "message" that is available in a million other places.
There's something called human decency and compassion. Let poor Chuck Harder alone; let him rest and recuperate in some warm tropical climate. Perhaps after a year or two, when he's sufficiently healed, he can get back into politics in some fashion.
