The Even OLDER WKBW 1520/1470 Radio (and WGR)

I have been searching for what WKBW sounded like before the top 40 era. Steve Cichon gives us a glimpse and a couple of samples of audio from the past. I like this since it gives me an idea of what my parents might have heard. It's in the excellent article "Buffalo Broadcasting Turns 90" which is mainly about WGR but of course much of the history of WGR also includes WKBW due to the BBC (Buffalo Broadcasting Corp. that is). Listen to what the General Radio modulation monitor might have heard on 1520 or maybe 1470?

Amazing how clean it sounds. So much care had to go into those old broadcasts back in the days before peak limiters and audio processing.

thanks for the link,finally got to see the old WKBW studio ( on that link ) on Main,having not been from Buffalo but listening to station at night in New Jersey I always wondered what 1430 Main looked like.

Al, pretty amazing isn't it? I never got a tour of the old studios. Got there once only to be turned away, now I know why. I should have pushed a little but I was too polite in those days! WKBW-TV-7 was right next door for many years.

I have no proof of this but I always thought WKBW-TV benefitted from the popularity of WKBW radio. I'm not saying that Channel 7 wasn't a great TV station in it's own right.

I never got a chance to work in Buffalo radio, which I still consider my home town. I worked with people that went on to Buffalo. Charlie Warren went to WBEN and Dan Kelly went to WBUF and WKBW. It's an excellent radio market with a rich history. I would have been proud to work at any of the fine stations there.
