THE FARTHEST STATION EVER LOGGED FOR ME!!! LOGGED THURSDAY URGENT-READ NOW!

On Thursday, around 8PM, I was picking around the X-Band with my Sangean ATS-909 when on 1700 AM, I logged KVNS Brownsville, TX!!!!!!

It was very weak with a The Monkees singing from the 60s, then an ID weakly, then "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone", but I am praying to the DX gods about this huge catch!!!!!

Distance: 2021 Miles!!     :) :) :) ;D ;D ;D ;D

WHAT A GREAT CATCH!!!

(congrats!)

A hint: For those reporting specific DX, it would be helpful if you'd also post your location.

(Brownsville, Texas is awesome DX if you're in Boston. It's not worth typing if you're in Harlingen :) )

But the exact distance was mentioned, so the specific location being given isn't as important.

Congrats from me too! That's about the same distance as my last big catch earlier this year, LA to Tampa.

Enjoy your catch!

Good job!

Superb Catch! Clearly beats my 1829 mile reception of 1650/Torrance,CA in Central Indiana.

Ya know, as much as I've DXed lately, I don't spend nearly as much time on the X band as the rest of the dial and (for some reason) I've ignored the frequency of 1700. Maybe it's because I assumed it was the same typical end of the dial frequency like 530 and the first time I even checked that out was because someone here mentioned hearing a station in Cuba.

Anyway, after seeing this thread, I decided to check out 1700 tonight from here in Tampa. At first, I heard some Spanish speaking station but that rapidly faded out and then an oldies station came through fairly good for a few seconds and it definitely was coming from due west. Unfortunately, I was also hearing what probably is the AM DXer's worst nightmare ... LIGHTNING! There's a big line of storms out in the Gulf stretching in to the southeast and it's making it hard to hear what I'm catching. Whatever this oldies station is, they play rarely heard songs that someone such as myself can appreciate being in my late 40s. I heard an instrumental song that had to be from the late 60s when I was little that I hadn't heard in years! Unfortunately, I couldn't get the title of that because of the rapid fading and lightning. After about 10 minutes, the Spanish station was mainly taking control but the oldies station was doing a brief but weak couple of second fade in now and then. And the lightning was getting on my nerves.

I can't claim any offical catch with an ID but being the station is across nothing but the Gulf, I can almost bet it is KVNS.

Maybe tomorrow night I can have a better shot.

KVNS is the only station playing oldies on 1700. That's what you had. From Southern Florida it should be receivable. Your spanish station is from the Miami area. I can't remember the calls, they've gone through so many changes. They were once WCMQ when they went on the air at 1700 back in 1997.

The spanish language station was probably Miami.

Those ex banders can really travel. Someone in Australia reported & recorded WRLL Berwyn, Il which was broadcasting on 1690 at the time in 2003 & 2004.

I've gotten a 1700 playing oldies (at night) from Englewood FL (about 1 hr S of Tampa) sig strength fair to decent on a Bose Wave AM radio and on the car radio which is average at best on AM. But I didn't ID it. Seems like the station plays a number of songs back to back.

I am from Bothell, WA.

I used a Sangean ATS-909 with just the ferrite bar antenna.

I'm definitely going to be listening for KVNS tonight. There's no more lightning either.

That's what I noticed too, assuming that's what I was hearing. Since I didn't hear any official ID, I can't claim the catch so far. But like mimo said, they are the only station with that format. I don't think they have a website because I was going to give them a call if/when I get the ID and not only let them know I can rear them all this distance but also complement them on their music. I like oldies from the 60s and 70s and whatever I was hearing last night was the best variety I've heard.

The only 1700s I've ever gotten here in northern Illinois is Miami in the earlier X band days, which has now been replaced by sportstalk in Des Moines.

Well, this is weird. It's after 9:30 EDT and I've been listening to 1700. All I'm getting is a strong signal of the Spanish station and in the background, I'm hearing what sounds like some religious station. I looked in the station guide and I think it's from Alabama.

Not even the slightest trace of KVNS. :(

Yeah never know with skip conditions. Try another night.

So, that's what I heard from Costa Rica too (in January)! Oldies on 1700, but could never get an ID. Only very generic PSAs and music. Great signal.

Great catch. KVNS can often be heard on the Atlantic DX radio on Global Tuners.com, along with other US stations. One night I was hearing WEUP 1700 from Huntsville on GT but wasn't able to hear it here. I'm 45 miles south of the tx location.

garfl the 1700 station is definitely Miami. It booms into Orlando every eveing just before dusk. Also once a week I am in Miami for business and at dusk gospel 1680 from Orlando booms into Miami just before dusk.
