The First Day of WGNY-FM - 2/26/11

For those of you have missed it yesterday morning, I will be present to you an aircheck of the first day of WGNY-FM at 98.9. What is on 98.9 you may ask? It's a new oldies station in the Hudson Valley under the name "Fox Oldies". It was first announced back in September where the station had a construction permit to have a signal to reach Poughkeepsie and Kingston. By Fall, WGNY-FM when it was on 103.1 changed it's calls to WJGK, but they moved the WGNY-FM call letters to 98.9 some time later. The station has granted and work began on this new station. 98.9 is licensed to Rosendale which is south of Kingston and north of New Paltz where they served the entire Hudson Valley area. I was waited until the station kicked off. There was so jumbled mess of translators that jammed up the frequency. First, there was "The Bridge" which was a religious station that it was simulcast on 98.9, and WKZE when it was simulcast on 99.1 via translator. That has been changed since January when they moved to different frequencies to male room for it. But then, 98.9 began testing on its own. It started as a simulcast of "The Fox" at 103.1 as an AC, but that didn't end there, it was simucasting WJGK for a little bit until it went static, but they continued to test it. And then, 98.9 went on the air playing the oldies music commercial free to give an example of what the new radio station would be. After a series of songs being played commercial free with announcement about a new radio station coming, and all of the stuff are static, 98.9 got the finishing touches and BAM! At around 6:00 AM, WGNY-FM is now launched as "Fox Oldies 1220/98.9" and 98.9 is a brand new station.

After four years of not having an oldies station in the Hudson Valley, it is finally returned to the airwaves under the new frequency 98.9. I've been listening to WBPM's former "Cool 92.9" since 2005 or 2006 when it was great station, but then it pulled the plug back in February 2007 when Pamal took over and flipped to a classic hits format as "Classic Hits 92.9" which is a station that leans classic rock, just like the old WRKW did, but it still hurting WPDH which is true classic rock station on 101.5.

I was waiting to have oldies back on the air, I listened to some country stations like "The Wolf" and WRWD, many of them I posted so far, but not anymore. but after 4 years, oldies is back once again.

What you will hear on 98.9 is nothing but the music from the 50's, 60's and 70's, but there is no 80's songs in the mix. CBS-FM has been doing very well since the station returned back in 2007 after "Jack" pulled the plug due to poor ratings during the last 3 years. CBS-FM does the same with some 80's music in the mix along with a steady diet of 50's songs thrown in.

I posted 13 parts from the first day of WGNY-FM this morning from 4:55 AM until 7:00 PM. You might hear a little stunting of music and announcements that are coming in, plus the first Van Ritshie show and a few others all in one place.

Here is the first day of WGNY-FM on 98.9 from yesterday. I recorded 13 hours of the first day as an oldies station. If you are an oldies fan, this goes out to you. Enjoy!
