The Fish is the 2nd most listened to Christian music station

I was looking at total cume for 6+ for the nations Christian music stations and the Fish here had 648,500 weekly listeners for January. The nations leading Christian music station in Dallas has almost a million cume each week. Only the Houston station comes close in total weekly cume. No wonder Salem actually puts money in having live airshifts as often as they do.

What a great model for other stations to adopt: Re-investing $$$ into their stations and keeping it local!

Kudos to Salem! :)

Actually...Salem has tried the "Fish" format in several other cities and failed miserably....Chicago's Fish lasted less than 3 years and never made any money for Salem. The same goes for the Milwaukee Fish station...which Salem sold to K-Love. It seems that the format works best in the southern Bible-Belt states...but not up north. The K-Love stations suffer similarly up north. :-\

Cleveland Ohio's fish does decently in the PPMs.

It is a great model. It's a shame Salem doesn't do that for their News/Talk stations...

Salem's news/talk stations have a different business model. Their main purpose is to clear Salem's syndicated shows so the network will be appealing to advertisers who want to cover the important markets.

There is a word that always fascinates me. Medical people, nutritionists and exercise trainers like to talk about the way our body metabolizes certain foods and substances. Most of us get a pretty good idea what they are saying, but could not stand up in front of a group and explain metabolize. We do it, but we can't explain it very well.

The differences are a bit less pronounced today, but people in "The Bible Belt" do indeed metabolize their faith and it's music differently. People will argue whether Nashville or Atlanta is The Buckle of the Bible Belt. There is a northern Bible Belt and I would name Grand Rapids as it's Buckle. They have their very own metabolic program for faith and music.

Notice too...that the #1 station in Grand Rapids is formatted "Country". There has to be some correlation between that and the Bible Belt.

I haven't been to Grand Rapids in recent years so I don't have a "feel" for fine tuning of audience and taste. I don't think of the religious traits of the area being as tied to country music as the religious traits of say Georgia and Tennessee but maybe so.

What I find interesting is who is number 2, and how close behind #1 they are. #1 has a LOT of fizz in the transmitter power and location. Number 2 has "runt transmitter power" with a tower rather remotely located and yet they come in a strong second.

All of that is interesting to those who focus on ratings, but still does not tell us why a format like FISH in Atlanta does not do all that well in Grand Rapids and neighboring areas including Chicago and Wisconsin. I guess we will have to wait for someone to post who understands the area a bit better.
