The FM Band This Morning? ¡En Fuego!

OK. I know this borders on the geeky. Well, maybe MORE than borders... but anyway--

It has been MONTHS since a nice FM band opening. We finally got a nice one in Memphis this morning.

I didn't spend too much time on the FM band, as I was on 144 MHz ham most of the time (GEEK ALERT!) working into Florida, but I did get to flip around as I drove kids to school this morning. Signals from afar were strong. WHAL/95.7 was unlistenable in Germantown. Interference primarily from Little Rock was simply blowing them out of the water. 103.5 was getting grief from 1st adjacent WMXS/Montgomery, AL. 107.5 was taking big hits, too. I assume it was my old station in Jackson.

Stations I heard just casually flipping included KLRZ/100.3 in Larose, LA (south of New Orleans) at just under 400 miles. It was strong enough to hit in scan, and stood out due to their all Louisiana format. My son asked "what is that music, Dad?" Other channels usually pretty open around here (e.g., 106.5) we so full of stations, none were able to stay on top for long.

This stuff often comes in waves. While the band is mostly back to normal as the day heated up, often this stuff restarts as we get late in the day. Conditions looks favorable. So, we'll see.

101 was scratchy in collierville and 92.9 was a mess out here.

And SPEAKING of 92.9 - am I the only one hearing rumors of it's upcoming 'urban' flip?
Yes I know rumors are rampant in radio -- say that 5 times fast. But lets face it,
the fact that 93X is still drawing breath is suprising. It's not protecting anything for
anyone else in the cluster - so why is it still pumping the watts?
And if it did switch - why the heck would you go to yet another urban format?
There are only so many Cricket Outlets, Wing Joints and Clubs formerly known as
whatever in Memphis to split the urban buck.
Perhaps it's an unfounded rumor -- but still -- it makes you wonder what IS going on
there.

Well, Jill Bucco is the only one left who hasn't been given their own morning show... Maybe this can be her venue!
