The gayest radio show in Charlotte

Meh, Elvis Duran has been in radio for years, has been at Z100 in New York since '96, has held the morning slot there and his show has been nationally syndicated for a dozen years. He came out as gay in 2010.

While I applaud people like Elvis Duran and Anderson Cooper for blazing a path and setting an example for younger people who may be afraid that they'll never be successful because they're "different" than many others, at the same time I don't think the majority of listeners care if the jock or host they're listening to is gay or straight, black or white, or even male or female in many cases. If they're doing good radio, they'll get listeners and ratings. Now, if they insist on making their sexual orientation or race or gender a big part of their show, and print articles claiming to have "The Gayest Radio Show in zxy City", that may risk turning off some listeners and they need to keep that in mind.

as I gay man I totally agree. this article was not worthy of the front page of the Charlotte Observer.

What does that have to do with the linked article?
Point being: North Carolina in particular, seems to be frequently fascinated by the LGBT community, and are quick to publicly point out and eventually criticize individuals who are. Do you think in California, any radio or TV personality would be publicly recognized as gay?
Where I work in D.C., there are several folks working in front of the camera who are gay. Nobody publicly points that out, nor is it made a concern.

I'm completely missing the connection here, if there is one.

This guy came out and is promoting himself as gay, something he's very sure about and comfortable with. He got someone to write about it. His coming out has apparently not negatively affected his morning show ratings as he had feared it might.

It would be painting with a very broad, and probably biased brush to try to tie this to the bathroom bill which was concerned with a different situation.

Attempting to lump all sexual minorities and all of North Carolina together in one convenient package doesn't come across as very enlightened. The continued success of the Kiss 95.1 morning show would suggest that many in Charlotte aren't concerned either.

I read as much of the article as I could before the subscribe thing popped up. It's a local duo from what I read.

I had to laugh though. He thinks he's the only one...really? I can't count the number of gay people I worked with. All of them really great creative talents. The difference is back in the 70's, 80's and 90's nobody felt the need to parade their sexual preference in front of the whole world. Why should we care?

For whatever reason, (which if you read between the lines, is pretty obvious) North Carolina politics are obsessed with the LGBT community, seemingly looking for ways to demonize or at least pick a fight with what amounts to a small group. The Bathroom Bill was a good example.
Promoting your radio program as being tied to anything gay, is definitely poking the political bear. Based on lawmakers track record in that state, it wouldn't surprise me if they come out with a law banning gay on air personalities under the guise of protecting children from being indoctrinated.

I guess you never heard of Howard Stern? "Parading their (hetero)sexual preference in front of the whole world" (or at least the whole city) was one of the defining features of "shock jocks" in that era.

Point taken, I forgot because I made it a point not to listen to Stern and the other shock jocks.

Roy Brown apparently announced he is leaving the Kiss 95.1 morning show and moving to Cincinnati with his partner. No word on future changes or additions to the program. I still say move Bob and Sheri and flip the K-104.7 music format to the stronger signal on 95.1.
