The great translator invasion… of Pensacola

That far north, you could have been picking up 106.5 from ADX's registered Milton transmitter site. Tropo has been strong from the east including Panama City and Dothan... no reason a translator signal from Milton shouldn't drift west where no signal has gone before. This would be the first report of a signal actually existing on ADX's 106.5 translator from Milton or it could be the downtown location is testing and was on the air with silence on Thursday night. Just gotta wait and see.
If I didn't have to pick out the tiny "Band" button out of the 40 or so small buttons on my car radio I'd probably scan to WNRP on the 106.5 translator more often than I search out 1620 AM... on the other hand the Pensacola AMs still have a loyal audience in town so these translators are going to finish killing off the AM dial in the city and wind up hurting any AM that doesn't have an FM simulcast. Man, I hope the Catholics sell 103.3 or trade it for a stronger Pensacola AM station... I can't see a need for all that preaching on FM. The WDWR audience is willing to listen to AM. The translators are much more valuable to secular broadcasters in Pensacola due to the religious saturation of the FM non-com and AM bands.

I'm wading through this week's filings and came across this:

Omni Broadcasting has a CP to move W246BN (97.1, 250 watts vertical) from Walnut Lake Estates into the city of Pensacola. The parent station will be WPNN. The service contour is about the same as all the other move-ins.

When I started this thread I listed the translator as being in Atmore. The license still says Atmore but the actual licensed-but-silent TX location is Walnut Hills Estates north of Cantonment.

PNN was scheduled to move and become daytime only. I guess the translator will compensate for the night power.

I'm not sure it they lost their tower site. The new site has more power, very directional, and it looks like less coverage.

The Schroeders own the WPNN tower site. It is located in a very congested area and the Schroeders primary business is real estate so I assume they are preparing to clear the current tower site for a future sale. As I recall the proposed tower site for WPNN is in the WRNE/WEBY area where real estate is cheap and plentiful.

I was wondering why the Schroeders hadn't jumped in on the translator game. It's right up their ally. I believe they were the original owner/partner of the 98.7C2 CP and sold it for a tidy profit.

Thinking on the 97.1 Omni translator a little longer it wouldn't surprise me one bit if Omni kept 97.1 and LMAd or bought WPNN from the Schroeder family. Mike passed and Papa isn't in the best health anymore. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if Scott was ready to get out of the radio business at this point. Could 97.1 be the return of The Ticket to Pensacola? Very possible. Next time I talk to Scott or Papa Don I'll ask.

Hey Zach, have you noticed WGOX-LD walking west from Crestview? It's made three hops this year. I can't figure out why someone would see value in putting another LPTV on the air in Pensacola. I'm confused by this little TV station. Know anything about it besides it's owned by a church?
