The "independent" ran, run out of town on a rail

Just as George W. Bush caved in to the Democrats and fired Rummy (flip flop flip flop Georgey!),
John DePetro had a bark on WRKO that wasn't earned. The "Independent" man doesn't seem
to have any popularity if his petition has 300 and some odd people signing with a huge group being
jokers and - look at this - "line voided" but he keeps the # as if it is a vote! 74 Line Voided, 77 Line Voided.
A little honesty, DePetro

Name Comments
327. Dick Hurtz They fired Depetro? Go figure!
326. Peter O'Rourke If people want political correctness let them listen to NPR. Bring back Johnny D.
325. Janice O'Rourke John's show is lively and interesting - political correctness isn't. A bit of contraversy makes for good radio.
324. Donna Sarkisian
323. line voided
322. David and Kathy Eaton Bring John back. The only ones we listen to are Howie and John. We will not be listening to Todd Feinberg in the 9-12 time slot. We just don't care for him.
321. Tim McDonald

Duh, DePetro should remove Line #323. Also, 327 is pretty funny, isn't he from Holden, Mass?
(Dick Hurtz from Holden!) Wow. What an old cliche!

We endorse the John Depetro Petition to WRKO 680am Station Management.

Operative word "we".

This is the problem with Boston area radio. These "on-air personalities" aren't popular, they
grab the podium and use it as a Bully pulpit. Gay marriage in a blue state? They (meaning
the Corporation) demand "equal time" by ranting and raving about a non-issue.

Gay marriage is not as important as basic civil rights, but if Gay Marriage helps us really get
those civil rights (we don't have them now), then we must defend it.

A truly "Independent" man wouldn't have been so connected to the corporate higher-ups that
when he crossed the line he had no place to go when they had to cut him loose. Had he been
as independent as - say - Howard Stern - the people would've demanded his return.

John DePetro's biggest sin was insulting the intelligence of the listening audience. He isn't
smart enough to tell us how to live; he doesn't have the temperament to give both sides
equal time, and he knew his ratings were so bad he had to engage in Kerry Healey type "attacks".
Grace Ross showed...GRACE under pressure. Look at the e mail the Ross campaign sent me.
A big difference from the sniping the paper tiger e mailed.

Boston needs informative and entertaining talk show hosts. John Severin, Jay Feinburg, Todd DePetro,
the names change but the tedium persists.

A popular radio host will defy the odds - as Stern did. He bucked a big corporation and filled
Central Park. 285 or 327 HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE signatures on a petition? That won't even get DePetro on the waiting list at the Pine Street Inn.

311. The Mad Faxer This is totally unfair! Now who am I gonna pick on!

I still think he'd be great as the token conservative on Air America Boston. Co-host a point-counterpoint
show with Grace Ross. Of course, he may have to take a pay cut. He may find that the salary at
WKOX/WXKS is lower than the other offer he's been pursuing:

"Welcome to Dunkin Donuts. May I take your order please?"

At this point shouldn't JD reword the petition: Sign the petition to get John back on WHJJ!

at this point, he's the only one that doesn't know that he needs to move on. he's getting some bad legal advice...he should talk to joe vig about finding a good legal shark...

I think Peter Bellotti is representing him...related to former Mass AG (and one time gov candidate IIRC)
Frank Bellotti? Brian Maloney's latest Inside Radio column mentions that a lawsuit against WRKO is
likely, and the press conference was a way for him to get "good publicity" and convince people that he may have been unjustly fired, but I'm not sure how well a lawsuit would do. He was given the warning about going over the line. True, it wasn't against FCC regs to say those two words but WRKO maintains that the tone in which
he said them is key. Again, low ratings, pressure from advertisers and listeners, and maybe even the cost
factor (not sure how much he was making) may have figured into WRKO's decision.

This letter to the Herald from a woman in E. Boston says that DePetro had a "bombastic style of
interviewing guests" and she applauds the decision. Other talk hosts, true, have had the same style--
Savage comes to mind, and indeed he too lost a job because of something he said (MSNBC*). As the
letter implies, we do have free speech, true, but as it concludes, there are also consequences to
what you say.

*--a prankster claims credit to getting Savage stirred up, and Savage called him a "sodomite" and suggested
he get AIDS. As it was, several gay groups were not happy MSNBC gave him a show, and it was low-rated and at not exactly a prime time slot...MSNBC felt it was in their best interest to terminate him. Savage now
refers to the network as "More Silly Nonsense By Chicks". Reference:

What prankster? S.F. Chronicle: "Bob Foster, 39, a Sacramento computer technician, says he's been on CNN 25 times -- including three times on Larry King's show -- and once convinced a Fox News host that he was witnessing an earthquake, when he was really making the whole thing up." Foster likes to plug his fave show, Don
and Mike, as part of the pranks. I actually stumbled upon Foster's site doing some research-
eastcoastbob.com

Far worse than making sport of Grace Ross, agreed. Savage is syndicated, DePetro was on thin ice to begin with.

I'd be happy if they put something else on instead of Savage. They savaged his ratings anyway by putting
Todd Feinburg in his spot. A step up as far as the despicable talk goes, a step down in regards to talent.

Someone said on the Prov board that WHJJ will probably pick up Hannity and run him live 3-6 pm (currently
tape delayed on WPRO , 7-10 pm). Again not official yet...Not sure what would become of 'HJJ's Arlene Violet who currently holds that time slot.

But if that happened it would open up a slot on WPRO...DePetro...? Who knows.

Oh, and JD's site now says: "I have been invited to be a guest on a Boston radio show to tell my side of the story". Which one? Am guessing it's not on Guest St. Morrissey Blvd? (most likely)...Soldiers Field Rd.?
(not likely). Well he's asking for advice as to whether or not to accept the invite.

I have doubts the invitation ever happened. What station wants to draw attention to another? It could be his former station in Providence, but even that's a stretch. More likely this is a ploy by DePetro to keep some sort of a buzz going.

at this point they might as well give him his job back, beats Ted & Ellen or whatever else

WTKK-FM had Jimmy Myers on after he was canned by WILD-AM.
