The lack of sports talk in Nashville

I new in town and love sports and sports talk radio, and I know that 104.5 is the big (almost only) dog in town, but why isn't there any other real sports talk stations in town to give us an option ?

I like the 104.5 morning show, mostly Ingram and Wycheck....Howard is a jerk and I cant stand to listen to their NFL stuff when Kuharsky is on, he's an even bigger jerk. I'm no fan of the midday show since Clay Travis seems like the biggest jerk of them all and Bishop doesn't say much.........and I can't stand the afternoon show at all.

I've listened to WNSR also and there personalities are no better...........SO, where can I get some good sports talk in this town ?

I guess your SOL so you can either move where they have better sports shows for you or go to satellite radio cause those are the only valid choices since 106.7 was espn the fan but it decided to go to top 40 music.....sorry we have nothing but as you call them jerks for you to listen to

Sports talk works best when it's local or at least regional. That's why people who come from outside of this area have a hard time with local sports talk. It's like being a new kid in school, you just don't feel like you fit in until (if ever) you get wise to what's going on locally. And even then it's difficult if you don't have any kind of history here.

By the same token, I can't stand sports talk in many other parts of the country. It's often brash, features unlikable hosts who too often want to discuss things other than sports, and have foul mouths. Many would be listeners who defend that brand of sports talk usually like it best when the home teams are being trashed (our guys are so often accused of being homers by those people), or come across like clones of Jim Rome. Basically, these complainers are people who come here for all of the good things Nashville has to offer, but when they get here, they're unhappy that things aren't like the way they were in the crummy place they came from.

I'm afraid if you're looking for something different, you'll have to wait for "off hours" when the network programming kicks in.

Wow, and this AFTER 104.5 dumped Jim Rome!

No, I'm no Kentucky fan at all, although I appreciate their tradition.

Maybe I was too harsh in my comments, and since I came from Atlanta where sports talk is a joke, I had hoped that I would like Nashville better......I think the other poster was right that I might not get some of the "inside jokes" or comments that are passed since I haven't been here long enough to understand parts of it.

I do stand by what I said about listening to Kuharsky though and Travis seems like a shameless self promoter with his continual references to his book and his this and that.

Oh and DToTHeJ, I'm not a clone or fan of Rome either, just another me guy in the already full world of "me sports guys" that are around the country. That's why I really like Kevin Ingram who seems like a really laid back guy that just talks sports and other stuff and doesn't try to promote himself over the others or anything else.

After I made my initial comments, I do have to come back and admit that I'm not much of a fan of Howard's or Kuharsky's on-air approach either, but I do respect their knowledge. Believe it or not, Howard has mellowed some over time. You can excuse some of their approach on the fact that they're not just yankees, they're Yankees fans. These guys do, however, provide a balance to others on the station. What you'll discover over time is that the Wake-Up Zone is so well balanced that it's missing something when one of the three hosts is out. I would definitely prefer a different Titans/NFL reporter as opposed to Kuharsky so often. Some balance is lost when Kuharsky's on, once Kuharsky, Howard, and Wychek all start talking about the good ol' northeast, although Wychek is more often at least trying to bring fair thinking into the discussion. As is Indianan Blaine Bishop on the 3-hour Lunch, but that's a show that's still more of a homer's show (and Blaine will have much more to say when football's the largest part of the discussion). Either way, it's great having ex-Titans regularly on the station, especially these that have so much to bring to the table.

While I respect the balance, I prefer the home boys. Travis is a UT homer and can be quite obnoxious about it, but can also be a lot of fun. He grew on me rather quickly. Kevin Ingram is a Kentuckian from just a few miles up the road. Brent Doughtery is a Nashville area guy and another UT homer. Local George Plaster is a Nashville sports talk staple and a huge Braves fan. Doug Mathews is a former Vandy/UT/Oklahoma coach that now lives here, and a real champion for all things SEC, especially football. Willy Daunic is a reformed nor'easterner who played for Vandy (although he's still a Mets fan — at least that's better than being a Yankees fan).

What's strange for a Southern sports station is that you'll hear a lot of hockey talk, but after all, the Preds are the other major league team in town. The station really shines during football season: great coverage on Titans/NFL, college, and even high school football.

I see you're new to Nashville; you would have really liked former Zone host Darren MacFarland.

Was that sarcasm? I hope so...I was never so happy to see a guy leave a station then when Darren left.

Anyway...if you are looking for an alternative you might try out 560 WNSR. They have upped their game and are focusing more on local stuff. Biddle and Kin in mid-days give you scouting overload...George P and Coleman do a laid back morning sports show that leans local in nature and I like Thom Abraham in the afternoons. The only thing I listen to the Zone for is the Preds morning update with Pete Weber and Preds games at night. I will listen when they have John McClain on in the afternoons but that's about it. Otherwise I will tune to 560...they will always be a very distant second but I prefer them.

You will find that a lot of the PEOPLE who have grown up and lived in Nashville their whole life don't really care for George Plaster and the afternoon show, either. A lot of it has to do with him and whoever is or has been on there with him come across as such HOMERS that they WOULD RARELY say anything CRITICAL against the teams they cover, until recently.

Sports talk isn't really my thing, but when I've listened to Plaster, I've never heard anyone who is more self serving than that guy. I was listening back during all the Preds and some how he always bring it back to himself in some fashion.

JWK: I agree with your post, but I think the ratings would say otherwise.

N.R.D. That's exactly right, but people love him for some reason. Doesn't do any prep, and has pretty limited knowledge of any sports outside the big 3.

The take of a radio-outsider? People listen to George, and think, "If he can do it, I could, it can't be that hard."
