The last 3 years of WCAU-AM; the inside story.

I and the rest of the posters would like to get the inside story as to what happened in the last 3 years of WCAU-AM from 1987-90. Format changes, programs that aired on the station, people that were hired and fired, why all of these moves were made and what was it like on the day when WCAU-AM went off the air in 1990. What happened in that meeting and who at CBS made the decision to end WCAU-AM?
 
Which rest of the posters is that statement a reference to? As one poster, 20 years later it's irrelevant, ancient history to me.
 
WCAU-AM was one of my favorite stations for long-form news. Not like the McDonalds approach of KYW.

Unfortunately, they made some serious financial moves. Like giving Frank Rizzo $75K a year to do a talk show.

I am also interested in what went on as the station was dieing. I had just gone home to get a nap after my morning show & the news guy called to tell me that the WCAU story had just come across AP. Hy Lit had just gone on-air on WOGL-AM.
 
I almost fell for it. Read the title of the thread and started thinking there was some inside story from a former employee, or an article from the day found. Then I looked over to the "started by" column and thought great I bet its just Julius asking another question.
 
They made a profit while running oldies. Then that sports format did get some attention. But they aired the train wreck known as the "Fabulous Sports Babe" during mid-day. God, was she bad!
 
I was there .... to sum it up the head of the AM stations and Radio division actually said in 1990, "Talk Radio Is Dead" They also didn't believe that Rush Limbaugh would work or that we should be conserned that Howard Stern was actually a talk show on FM. We can argue the pros and cons of the hires and fires in those three years but the fact is corporate had already blown taps on talk radio.
