The Man Who Invented "Action News" On WFIL-TV/WPVI, Frank Magid, Dies

Interesting that this comes just after WPVI had brought back its old Action News announcer, as is being reported in another thread on this forum.

Magid's "Action News" format, writes The New York Times, "was first applied in 1970... on WFIL, an ABC affiliate in Philadelphia. As a result, “ratings jump and the format is widely imitated,” the trade publication Broadcasting & Cable wrote in 2007."

Also, bet you didn't know that Magid was vocal in the launch of the now-defunct USFL football league in the 1980's.

Makes you think. What would Philly news be today if not for this guy? Would Jim Gardner even be a household name in this region?

With that said, you would think ch6 would make mention of his passing. However 6abc.com has nothing.
