The Markham/Bay City FM at 92.5 Finally Has a Buyer

After being on the market for several years, Richard Witkovski has just purchased KZRC-FM for $ 400,000.

Licensed to Markham, Southwest of Houston, it's been a Bay City station with a signal that barely gets outside of Matagorda County.

Any chance it can be upgraded? Anybody know anything about the new owner?

I can tell you that R.E. "Dick" Witkovski has pulled off a number of station upgrades, some of them quite lucrative. The first time I spoke with him was in the '80's when he owned a station in Granbury. It moved (or "morphed") into the Dallas-Fort Worth area years later as part of a massive reallocation. He got a healthy upgrade for a small station he bought in Oklahoma which is now D/FW rim-shot KNOR 93.7. The same thing happened with KBOC 98.3 Bridgeport, another D/FW move-in. Both stations are now owned by Liberman. So it's obvious that Witkovski can get things done. He has many years of experience in broadcasting, the majority of it in engineering.

As for the Markham station, though, I'm not so sure. The Matagorda County area, like so many other places, is over-radioed and there are applications for even more stations. Getting into the Houston area on their present frequency isn't workable and I don't see any massive reallocations on the horizon without millions of dollars and many years to invest. I've worked on a lot of upgrade matters over the years, and $400K isn't that much if something better is a possibility down the road. Unless Witkovski knows something I don't, this one doesn't look too appealing.

I worked for Witkovski for a short time. (He sold our station). He really enjoys radio and has fun while he's in the process of upgrading and downgrading stations. He lets the staff do their job and have fun at it.

I really enjoyed my 3 months with his company.
