The Miss America Pageant Was On Last Night... Did Anyone Notice?

Irrelevance and lack of interest have plagued the once-famed pageant off of network TV. It's been banished to cable for several years. It even turned up on CMT at one point.

Can anyone guess which network the pageant was broadcast on last night?

And here's something else for you to chew on:

Does anyone know who is airing the big NHL All-Star Game tonight?

TLC, though I'm sure not many people knew about it.

The NHL question is easier - Versus - aka the Hockey Network.

The Miss America Pageant is still held? Really? Do the contestants still run around in circles with their owners, and jump through hoops and wear cute costumes and stuff?

Oh wait. I think that's the dog show I'm thinking of. ;D

Didn't even know the pageant was on last night. Since it's now on a cable network and my local paper made no mention about, what was once America's most-watched beauty contests has now fallen through the cracks into obscurity.

I found out about it yesterday morning because one of the wire services had a story on Miss Indiana, who did win the competition.

I did. I saw the last half hour of the pageant. It was alright. They've tried to make it more like a reality show. There's apparently a nightly reality show about the contestants on TLC leading up to the pageant night.

One thing they did do that I like: they had 3 girls left when the winner was announced. I've always found it odd that they quickly announced the first runner up and the winner at once. Kind of gave short shrift to the first runner up. As it was last night, two girls who won nothing were there when the winner celebrated. Each of the runners up got proper time and accolades.

As for the NHL All-Star game: Versus.. but I wouldn't call that the Hockey Network since there is the NHL Network. Versus does air other things. I've seen plenty of college football on the channel.

There use to be one or 2 major pageants a year.....one in Atlantic City in Sept. and one in the spring April or May. I think people are awarded too death where there are awards for extras, celebrity personalties, wardrobes, etc....and it comes down to Who cares??? It''s like the NFL having 2 or 3 super bowls a year. The thill is over played.

The NFL? Wait until 2010. The Pro Bowl will be played on the in-between Sunday next year as an experiment. It'll be in Miami, the host city of Super Bowl XLIV.

As for the pageant, shouldn't that have been on Lifetime or Oxygen instead? It's further proof that TLC now stands for Total Lifeless Crap. :(

Didn't part of the Miss America Pageant's downfall come from the pageant officials only allowing it to be shown on Saturday night, which is now a dead end time slot for any of the big 4 networks? They shot themselves in the foot by doing that.

I think they also shot themselves in the foot when they decided to host the pageant in Gary Indiana for several consecutive years.

Sounds like an element they might have lifted from "American Idol"...

Gary, Indiana. LOL. Where is Ron Howard when you need him?

Poor dear Gary Indiana. The dirt of US Steel is in my DNA. Gary was once a wonderful place. Where is Michael Jackson when you need him?

I think popular opinion has turned against the Miss America pageant because they LOOK like they're being exploited (or perhaps exploiting themselves) for money and ratings. There are plenty of subtleties in society about women being objects, but this has to be one of the most blatant exhibitions of it. I mean my gosh they were doing the swimsuit portion of the program with Timbaland playing in the background. I'm not saying I'm against it, but there are plenty of people who just don't have interest in that kind of fare anymore, and for good reason.

There's some things that were just bound to happen, eventually, and rightly so...

An African-American President? Great.

The Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl? More power to 'em.

A Timbaland performance on TLC, of all channels? That may make you want to scratch your noggin a few times...

It really does look like beauty pageants are a dying form of entertainment. Don't forget about the Miss USA pageant. I think that's still being televised, but I'm sure it's not as popular as it used to be. From what I recall, back in the old days, I think even state pageants were popular. They would be syndicated throughout the whole state, pre-empting network programming. I think Florida still does it, but they may be the only ones. They even have their own YouTube channel. However, I think last year, the Miss Teen USA pageant was not televised at all. I wonder if it has to do with what happened in 2007 with Miss Teen South Carolina. For those of you who don't remember her, she was that one who misunderstood the final question, and she babbled all that stuff that made no sense.

It's interesting to think about the evolution of some of our most venerable cable networks. In the 1980s, TLC truly stood for The Learning Channel and was a scrappy network devoted to higher education telecourses and similar fare. Who would have thought that 20 years later, under Discovery Channel ownership, TLC would be showing Miss America?

She probably got to be the most famous off of doing it, but I don't think we can even imagine that she was "that one" who didn't understand and babbled and made no sense.
"that one" ;D ;D
That's been pageant protocol since the 1960s! :D

I was also remembering when the L stood for Learning, but then every time my wife watches one of the fashion-clothes shows on TLC, all the commercials are for shows about midgets errrr little people or people who have medical abnormalities. I think L stands for Leering now, like people do at a car wreck.

Also the availability of nudity on tv and everywhere else has probably cut down on the Miss America audience.

I remember about ten years ago flipping by TLC and they were showing a documentary on a pregnant woman going through her third trimester. Full freakin' frontal.

And today... they do a complete 180 with Miss America.
