Which station should I start with? There are so many that I skip over daily while scanning the dial.

Speaking of boring, why doesn't anyone ever talk about jack and ron? How have they kept their jobs for so long? I have no idea how their ratings are, but for the longest time, people in radio would joke about how low that station's ratings were. If they are that bad, then why do they continue to keep the same people on the air?

I like compelling radio, but right now, I'm compelled to listen to satellite radio. Or roy d murcer. At least he's entertaining.
 
I would say KKWD Wild 104.9, still overplaying songs from 5 years ago that other stations have forgotten about. Also "The Franchise" and the new Hank FM. Honestly OKC radio is probably the worst of virtually any major city I've heard. That is because nobody is willing to think even a little bit outside of the narrow box.
 
LOL! I think it would be much easier to identify the few stations in this market that are not 100% boring/lame/etc. than the ones that ARE boring. Come to think of it, identifying which one in this market that is a great station would be very difficult too. I don't know if other markets are this stale, but if they are, it certainly would account for the PUR (people using radio) numbers dropping consistently over the years.... When there's tons of channels and it's all crap, people look elsewhere. Somehow the "big boys" need to realize they are screwing up their long-term investment by turning out CRAP.
 
I agree 100%. Radio in this town sucks. I'm trying to think of the last time I heard anything on the radio that excited me. Funny thing is, nothing stands out. I thought that hank would have been something great, but when I heard them play guys do it all the time, I immediately changed the channel. Never in my life would I have thought that song to be classic country. I really thought that hank would be all local and great music, but it appears that I was wrong. And now I have serious doubts that they stand a chance to be a contender to (unsaid broadcast company) and their mediocre radio stations.

Okcradioguy says it perfectly. The big boys are turning out CRAP. And it stinks.

What's wrong with "Guys Do It All-the-Time?" Why isn't it classic country? It's 17-18 years old now. While I understand it may sound more like today's country than Hank Sr., classic country is a format that needs to appeal to the 35-54 crowd. People just turning 21 when the song came out are about to turn 40 today.

I do, however, agree with you that it's going to be tough to compete with that big company down the street. However, that's going to be more because of signal limitations than the format. If Hank FM's lucky, its citygrade signal covers half the market, and that's where 95% of listening will occur, even in flatlands like OKC. What you put on that stick hardly matters. You're not going to be a big player in the market. If it were me, I'd have gone urban with 99.7 because 103.5's signal is terrible in the metro, and urban fans have already proven they'll put up with a crappy signal to hear their music. Of course, urban has its problems, too. It's incredibly tough to sell, even when it tops the market.

I don't know how well it does in morning drive, but KYIS used to outbill its ratings share significantly. It goes back to what I was saying about urban radio. Urban may do well in the ratings in most markets, but it's often barely in the top-10 when it comes to billing. Advertisers simply don't want that audience. It may be more based on stereotype than anything else, but advertisers don't see the urban audience, as a whole, as being very affluent, and, being at least 70% males under 34, it's not seen as controlling the purse strings at its house. KYIS may not be getting a lot of listeners, but it's getting the audience advertisers want.
 
When I was institutionalized, I used to hear guys do it all the time on the radio thru the speakers in the building. I can't bear to hear it again. I'm better now, but that song....I hate it.

I thought about a new format called "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock And Roll". Like Donnie and Marie years ago. The station's dj's would be split, half a little bit country, half a little bit rock and roll. The dj's are little people, and whenever they made live appearances, they would wrestle each other, and the person who won would get to play a little bit of whatever they were. Country or rock and roll. A lot of people love midget wrestling, this way you could almost guarantee an audience at your live broadcasts. And when people tire of watching them wrestle themselves, we could create this big dramatic storyline where they break in to jack and rons studio, ambush them while they're on the air and take over the airwaves. Of course, it would all be made up, but I'm sure that news9 would interrupt their programming for this sensational story. Wouldn't they all look cute sitting on stan's motorcycle.

I'm out for a few days. A bail jumper has made it all the way to Winterset Iowa, and I'm bringing him back whether he likes it or not. I'll make him listen to the franchise as punishment when I get him back to okc.

I completely agree. 99.7 is a perfect signal for urban and its about time that OKC gets a real urban station. I personally like 103.5 but its signal is terrible and you can get it better in Lawton than you can OKC. OKC is probably the only major city I can think of in the country without a strong hip-hop/r&b station with the exception of the west coast where urban doesn't do as well for some reason. Wild 97.9/104.9 (sort of) filled the niche until Cumulus destroyed it. Tulsa has been able to support heritage K-Jamz 105.3 for decades and they have a smaller black population than OKC does. Why has OKC never been able to support an urban station?

Please no. A country/classic rock hybrid was tried in Fort Smith and it was a huge flop.
 
Funny but true...

Many people don't like to use the word 'midget', they prefer to follow the politically correct crowd and say 'little people'. I have no problem with that. My biological dad is a midget, he calls himself one and he is perfectly fine with that. For the longest time, he owned an old 78 MG Midget. Many times I would call to check on him, and my mom would say something like 'we're taking the midget out for a drive today'. I was never sure if she was talking about my dad or the car.
 
Back to the original question, yeah radio is pretty bad about everywhere, but OKC radio is especially boring. Tulsa's stations are really a breath of fresh air comparatively speaking. If you don't like country, contemporary Christian, or sports talk, there isn't much to choose from.

Little Rock is almost as bad. Basically anywhere that Cumulus has a large presence is has terrible stations.

It always goes back to OKC having fewer stations per capita than most markets its size. With urban usually billing less than its ratings share would otherwise indicate, it's a little bit risky when you consider how many other formats are available. There's little chance I'd do urban from a class C or C1 near I-44 and Britton Rd if you know what I mean. However, I do think it could be viable from one of the lower power or rimshot sticks.
