The Networks - Cable News Stations Late in Breaking News of Death of Pres Ford

I heard the notice of the passing of Gerald Ford as a breaking news story on our local news here in Boston on CBS 4 but it was a good thirty minutes before it even appeared as a crawl on CNN or Fox News. CNBC had nothing. Finally, sometime after Midnight Anderson Cooper came on CNN with a discussion of President Ford's passing.

Why were they so late and the locals far ahead of them?

My only guess is that the cable networks were running taped programming and also tha the report hadn't been confirmed until Midnight.

Ironically ESPNNews had the news on its crawl which I found odd until I found out that Gerald Ford had played on Michigan's football team way back when.

You mean its "Breaking News" bullet actually had some "breaking news" that wasn't over two hours old for a change? I'm surprised they haven't sold advertising for that space yet, but that's another story for another day...

ESPNews used to have advertising in that space for a long time. Now it is used for "Braking news" and what is coming up on live discussion shows.

I guess many newspapers on the east coast held back their final editions to include Ford's death. When Reagan died in 2004, it happened early in the day so all the papers had the death of Reagan in their Sunday papers except for USA Today which does not print on weekends and had it in the Monday edition.

Newsday (Long Island) and the Newark Star-Ledger (New Jersey) didn't tear apart their print editions to report his death. The story did lead those papers' websites.

The New York Daily News had the Ford death for the Sports Final, the edition that's posted online. Even had a look back at the story behind the paper's most famous headline -- "Ford to City: Drop Dead".

FWIW the Star-Ledger also missed the death of Princess Diana.

I saw about the death of Prez. Ford on CNN after 12AM. Anderson Cooper was on live instead of a rebroadcast of Larry King.

The Bristol Press and New Britian Herald, two newspapers in Connecticut owned by the Journal-Register of New Jersery had the story listed on the side of the cover story along with other article highlights. The article appeared on Page 17.
