THE NEW RENDA GM....WE ALL KNOW HIM...AND IT IS OFFICAL AS WELL

Renda has named Gary Spurgeon as the GM....This is what has been posted on the Radio and Records website.Gary Spurgeon takes on a new role as GM for Renda/Jacksonville's AC WEJZ, Country WGNE and Oldies WKQL, R&R has confirmed. He replaces Bill Scull, who exited the stations yesterday. Spurgeon most recently served as Market Manager of Cox's Jacksonville cluster; he and former WAPE GM Dick Williams resigned from their respective positions at the cluster in March. Spurgeon begins his new duties immediately. This could be the best news for the whole Renda cluster.....Gary has smarts as we know....lets focus on the good of this..NOW GARY WE WANT YOU TO THIS: BRING PAT GARRETT IN TO RUN KOOL AND TO SEND BRIGGS PACKING HIS BAGS...........AMEN BROTHERS FINALLY WE GET WHAT WE WANTED ON ONE PART......LETS CELEBRATE.....Later guys.

I've heard great things about Gary, like Bill Scull Gary got fired from Cox. GM turn over is high, owners and stockholders have impossible expectations of radio today.Bill Scull did a great job for Renda, but he got a raw deal, so that's life. Kool is not bad, but hey marketing, a mid-day jock and city grade signal would be a big improvement! Besides Oldies has become a marginal format, even Cox saw the handwriting on the wall and gave up! Maybe Cox was smarter? Hard telling not knowing. [/color]

...and if for some reason Gary Spurgeon won't bring in Pat Garrett to program KOOL, make Tom Murphy the PD and tell Briggs to take a hike.

and for that matter, either get Arf off mornings or tell him to follow Briggs. The HUGE mistake Renda has made with KOOL is when you switch formats why would you EVER keep the same people on the same frequency. Goodbye Arf and Briggs. Your day is over.

From a prior post:Bill Scull did a great job for Renda, but he got a raw deal, so that's life. I guess none of us will ever know the true story. Perhaps Mr. Scull did not have a choice with on-air talent or programmer. But one thing is certain. From a listening perspective there was one disaster after the next. I think most of us expect some format glitches when something new is launched. If you just look at KOOL, there were on-air issues that lasted for weeks. It seemed, and many of you agreed, that no one in charge was listening to what was going on. How the all-over-the map kind of programming was allowed to continue is beyond me. Yeah, it's easy to sit back and be a Monday morning quarterback, but to me there is no excuse for the continuous bad performance. Doesn't someone have to approve what goes on the air? Specifically sweepers would say one thing about programming and than the tune immediately following would say something else. To me it's all about credibility and there was little of that! And still to this day, the local TV book doesn't have most of it right. WWRR is still listed instead of WKQL. WGNE isn't even listed and WSOS is touted as adult contemporary. Not good. Enough said.As far as Gary Spurgeon is concerned, I must say I'm surprised he's now with Renda. When he lost his job at Cox, I thought surely Renda would miss yet another opportunity. I have this feeling in my gut that he would want (and who can blame him) to give WKQL a complete overhaul into something else. Even if that's the case, I don't believe you can discount Pat Garrett. He shouldn't be looked at as someone who can just program 60s/70s. I have a ton of respect for his work. His attention to detail, desire to win and programming discipline would work to Renda's advantage no matter what the format. That's just my opinion. It will be interesting to see how this all turns out.

THe funny thing is that Renda Jax is #1 in illing for all of the Renda markets and has made budget the past three months. I feel that TR wanted to make the change last year. Gary will be a good addition for the cluster and hopefully will put some money behind WKQL.
