The next station to go HD in Lafayette unbelievably is........

The next station to go HD in Lafayette unbelievably is........mom and pop owned KAJN 102.9. Albeit they are the most powerful station in Lafayette class wise (100kw@1600ft). In a side note KMDL 97.3 has been on and off the air with their IBOC signal. They seem to be having trouble with the sidebands interfering with the main signal.

AND this is unbelievable??? Posh!!! Heck in the Beaumont area, the 1st station licensed to the triangle to implement HD was (tada!) KVLU, owned by Lamar University...(surely a good spending of student's tuition or those endowments ;). It DID clean up their analog signal though.....amazing how all the spurious signals went away when the HD came online.....

KZMZ is already suffering from a "fading" effect when KMDL 97.3 has their HD transmitter turned on. I noticed when KAJN has their HD running it seems to affects my ability to lock in HD reception of WFMF on my Kenwood car receiver in Lafayette.

I remember 5 or so years ago, WFMF was never clear in Lafayette. KTCX in Beaumont would run all over it at night, even though less powerful and farther away. Over the past couple of years, WFMF has been signicantly better.

It will be interesting to see how KZMZ reception is in Lafayette after Planet gets their HD fired up too.

No I want to see the problems in West and Central St. Mary and Eastern Iberia parish when they get their HD cranked up with KMYO (old KBZZ) 96.7 Morgan City...Actually interesting to see what it will do espcially in the tropo that is a normal occurance in this neck of the woods (where we can listen to all the Lafayette stations almost every morning there is a fog)

Also why is KAJN going HD for? With 3 LPTVs they will have to convert in a year and some change and counting to DTV..won't they have to put some cash into these stations first?

But I've found the signal weaker in the past few years from the Forest Hill tower it seems than say 2003 IMO...

I believe CC downgraded KZMZ from a C to a C0. If I remember correctly, they were on the KALB-TV tower @ 1500 feet dating back from when they were co-owned with KALB-TV and KALB-AM. CC moved KZMZ to the KRRV/KKST tower at approximately 1000 ft, probably as a cost-saving move.

No... knowing CC ..cheaper to only pay one bill than 2 on towers.... (that and CC owned the Forest Hill tower that ZMZ,RRV,KST are now on).....

Most tower companies/owners charge at bare minimum a dollar per foot per month (this was figures in 2000..that figure is probably closer to $1.50 by now)

Another thing to remember, Media General who owns KALB had to put a new antenna if I remember on their Forest Hill site for DTV..

I do know KZMZ was downgraded to a C0 due to movements in Texas to get a station closer to the Houston Market

If I remember KALB-AM became KJMJ and is broadcasting from a 3 antenna array (nighttime only) off of Radio Rd. in a section of Pineville called Wardville by the locals.

Actually I think KDBS am 's transmitter and shack can be seen right off of I-49

How long ago was ZMZ downgraded? The only move I can think of that would have caused that would have been 97.1 KTHT (Licensed to Cleveland) but when it was originally built, it was on a 1000ft tower between Shepherd and Coldspring...when they upgraded to full C, their new 2000ft tower (owned by CC at the time; then spun to COX after the AMFM merger) was built right next to the 1000ft which came down. They made no physical move except UP).

I believe you are correct on KDBS...I have driven past their site a couple of times on 49 while in the area for business.

I can't find exactly why the downgraded for but the application was done about the same time KZMZ was taken over by Clear Channel but was only Oked by the FCC in around 2005 according to FCC applications.

I remember reading it on this board (but the search of pre takeover is apparently still not up) that it was trying to move or was purposely moved to facilitate a station in the Houston or near Houston area.

My mind is apparently getting fuzzy CW

Proabably was due to another apps somewhere (a Crawford one or Proctor one I bet); CC had it's Beaumont area 106.1 downgraded from C to C0 due to an app for a 106.1 new drop in (I think it was a Crawford app) in the Alex area....KIOC is on KBTV's tower and CC didnt want to spend the money for a new tower of at least 1670 ft which would be the highest in the Bmt-Pt Arthur-Orange area (and NO I am not including the 2000ft ones 25miles west...those are rimshots for Houston...even though 5 out of 6 Class C stations are licensed to BPT and surrounding area and NOT Houston). Funny thing, Cumulus HAS FAA and FCC clearance for a 2000ft tower in Vidor, TX east of the KBTV and KFDM towers...but will never build it (I would be shocked if they did)..

To my knowledge, the KZMZ downgrade was simply a result of:

1. CC consolidating KZMZ's xmitter with KRRV & KKST to avoid paying extra rent
2. As a result of the lower height, KZMZ did not meet the height requirements of a class "C" and was downgraded to a "C0"

Having said that much...not sure why Regent didn't try to move KFTE further north, away from KMYO, maybe to Church Point or the KLWB tower and get a power increase. It would allow them to put a city grade signal into Opelousas, Eunice, and Ville Platte. Signal is decent in the car in Opelousas but marginal on a tabletop radio. Eunice and Ville Platte are much tougher, especially when there is any sort of atmospheric enhancement. I can't see which other station may prevent them from increasing power.

I may have been confusing 96.9 with KIOC but yeah I know that Crawford wanted to drop a few As in the middle of nowhere in his filings....

If I remember however KZMZ had moved but hadn't actually applied for the license for the C0 and someone had to wait for KZMZ to file for the license to move downward... I may be wrong however.... But you are right on the consolidation.... add to that KALB needed more space for the DTV transmitter.

I do know a lot of manervering was done to put KQNH on 97.3 in Shreveport including downgrading a station (and switching it's channel) in Natchitoches.

And KFTE can't move north due to KZMZ being in Forest Hill. (by moving the transmitter to the NW, they could be very close or under that allowed for the spacing regulations as they have to be 89km or roughly 50 miles from each other... right now they are 114km apart..basically anywheres north of I-10 would be in the do not allow zone.. plus at that distance you are almost getting into a issue with 107.1 KOGM (IF seperation issues as they would be within 10 km or so of having to be separate from KOGM)

My mind can blank out on somethings, but not others it seems.... Thanks Steven and CW

so zmz is or is not HD? speaking of HD. anyone notice 96.1 and 102.5 baton rouge have pure static on the left and right side of the frequencies now? I feel sorry for people that still listen to AM/FM radio as a source of entertainment ;D

ZMZ is not in HD. Also, they do not even have RDS anymore. The pure static on both sides of a frequency is due to them running HD. It's normal for a station running HD. Well, maybe not "normal" but it's how HD works.

The crew at Cenla just dropped a wad of cash on the Texas Ave. Studios and on the transmitter at 1410 KDBS so other than NPR on 90.7 (KLSA) , I think you can forget about HD in Alexandria for a while (Actually I expect The US 165 cities to be the last in Louisiana to get it...(Lake Charles,Alexandria,Monroe)
