The Official Website of The CW - What Will It Be? Also...How Soon Should Marketing Of The CW Begin?

I'm guessing thecw.com will be their official website.

You'd think they'd already have a website up with a "COMING THIS FALL" message or something like that.

Also, what marketing campaign will be unveiled to present The CW to the viewers? They need to get the ball rolling, IMHO, if they want resonance and familiarity by the time September arrives.

But I digress.

Anyone have any ideas out there as to what the Internet presence will eventually be for The CW?
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 01/26/06 09:08 AM.

Re: The Official Website of The CW

I looked it up right after the announcement. There was one of those web-squatters with a bunch of graphics/links/crap, then I looked again after a few minutes, and it had changed, with someone's email addy along the top saying something to the effect that "for info on acquiring this domain email ------ ", now it has the coming-soon/you're-the-owner stuff.

CBS Gets Smart On Domain Registration

Interesting - the domain was created in November and registered under "Domains by Proxy" anonymously, long before anyone had any idea this was coming. Is CBS/etc. becoming more cautious about this stuff after getting burned by all those in-the-open "Free FM" domains?

Registrant:
Domains by Proxy, Inc.

This assumes two things:

First, that thecw.com belongs to The CW. What I see when I go there is a completely generic "coming soon" page. There's no way to be certain, of course, but I suspect that November registration had nothing to do with the new network and was not done by CBS. There are plenty of other reasons why someone might want "thecw.com," after all.

(It's also interesting to note that most of the cw9.com, cw11.com, cw56.com and so on domains were long ago claimed by other people, some of whom have the initials CW. Won't make things easy for the individual stations.)

But - second - this assumes that the name of the network when it launches will really be "The CW." It's a terrible name, it's a logo that looks like it was thrown together in five minutes, and there's plenty of time between now and September, now that this is all out in the open, for a branding firm to come up with a more plausible identity.

I, for one, don't expect to actually see "The CW" on my television nine months from now.
______________

Reason #3

There is also a third reason, if you follow all the media coverage of the new network ... Les Moonves says the idea of shutting down UPN and the WB and starting a new replacement network was hatched over Thanksgiving weekend, and that was after the date the domain was registered.
______________

Point well taken.

I'm not really familiar with whatever reason someone would register a domain of "thecw.com", and actually, my good friend Mr. Fybush points out something I've been thinking the past few days.

"The CW" is simply an awful name, and I also suspect that CBS/TW will figure it out at some point and call the network something else by September.

I just thought it was an interesting curiosity, considering that CBS' "Free FM" plans have been stalked out by Internet surfers weeks before they happen due to domain registration. And were it not for the timing mentioned above, I'd wonder if they hadn't done it anyway...even if "The CW" wasn't the name the network would eventually use. At this point, it's still a trademark, and we don't know what role it'll play (if any) in the new network's branding when it launches.

Re: OK, so I'm not a detective...

It's not at all unusual however, if you think about it.
If I recall correctly, back when 20th Century Fox decided to start the Fox network, it was actually called "FBC," (Fox Broadcasting Company). I remember that "The Late Show with Joan Rivers" was their first show and when they announced it, they had this big banner that had F.B.C. engraved in stones.

When they eventually came on the air, neither the name "FBC" or the logo survived...

I'm just wondering if having "C" standing for CBS will cause some CBS affiliates to cry foul?

The New Network Name

I agree with whoever it was in whatever thread it was who said that they should resurrect the old TNN/The National Network identity for the new network. (Okay, so the subject line is TNNN ... I was being clever.)

They could even use the old logo ... I'm sure CBS has copies of it archived ...
______________

It was me :) http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Post=639761&Board=tv-usa

BTW, they still have there old website tnnonline.com which currently redirects you spiketv.com

Now I wouldn't be surprise if they called the new network "Free TV" like there "Free FM" stations. Can you say "Free TV New york"?
______________
