THE ONE FOR COUNTRY, SINCE 1966 - ANY WHIM 1110 ALUMNI OUT THERE ???

Just wondering if anyone is out there who worked on Eastern Avenue, John Street, Pavillion Avenue, or ALL THREE ? :-\

Mark

I was there in '82 and '86 form the little house at 125 Eastern Avenue. Worked under Tom Haughey(Tom Allen). Jim O'Brien, and later, the infamous Jack J. Shannon(Steven Otero). My bit was:
1110, WHIM, Dave Allen in the chair AND inside your radio...

When I did traffic for WHIM, Tom Allen had one of my favorite lines...."We got a new coffee maker here at the station, but when I hit the button marked brew, all I get is coffee."
And. of course, Jim O'Brien telling us someone used to call saying, "Is this Jim O'Briman?"
Mike

My first radio gig was at WHIM from '83 to Jan '86.

Gawd, was I ever horrible, and I am forever indebted to Jim O'Brien for his belief in me and to Dick Allen for letting Jim give me the chance.

I would get much better with experience, and would have a fairly decent career, working airshifts at and programming stations in Orlando, Daytona and Florida's Treasure Coast.

I'm a civilian now, working in software and website development, but I will always treasure the memories of the converted house on Eastern Avenue and the folks that worked there - like Jim, Chuck H., Vinnie, Naomi D., Kevin, et al.

glc, that was probably late 80s or so. Around the time I listened to anyone and everyone because I was interested in getting into radio then. My parents listened to country too. The station sounded good because the jocks just sounded like contemporary jocks. Judging by the names you threw out the lineup would have been Vinnie Grecco mornings with Naomi Di Clemente. Chuck Hinman mid days. Jim O'Brien afternoons. I don't know who did nights. Ron St Pierre worked there too but I think it was earlier. Oh and I know the building mainly because of another one in close proximity. Wonder if it's a private house again?

I have worked at both Eastern Ave. and Pavallion
I've started in the early 80's helping out with Jim O , Mike Besette, and later finally got a gig on the air.. Stayed on till 89 then moved on then came back and stayed till the end when I signed off the station on that Final Day for Radio Disney the next morning.
I remember those good days with WHIM and the great people that past through that made WHIM "The One for Country"

Thanks for the memories
Ray Daulton

We actually have a station people enjoyed working at on here?

Sure...it was like the old Fezziwig story...it couldn't be measured by the money that we made...since we didn't make any. Lots of great memories, and top notch people, like Ray Daulton, Art Waterman, Paul McArthur, Jim O'Brien, Ann Carter, and the list goes on and on. I was there back in the 80's, and then returned for awhile in the 90's, both times as a weekender. Remember, once they moved out of the old house (Eastern Avenue), there was a short time on John Street, before the move to Pavillion Avenue (from what my hazy radio memories allow me to remember).
I owe a debt of gratitude to Dick Allen for hiring me, and then letting me return. Those were the good old days. Who ever thought that cue scratched 45's would ever bring back such great memories...

OK I'll admit I worked at one of those locations. Actually, eventually 2 buildings on Eastern & 1 on John at a different time of life. Believe it or not, I read this topic when it was posted & actually dreamed I was back there but in the present day. Great people, a great time, & a prime example of a team working together because they wanted to make things work out of pride. Of course after the dream I woke up with this urgent need to cash any paychecks around the house while there was money in the payroll account. Anybody remember The Incredible Broadcast Buggy?

Was that the same Tom Allen that used to be on WMEX?

There was no night person, per se, as it was a Daytimer at that time. In the summer, part-timers would have the evening shift until sign-off - although I have vague memories of Chuck doing a split shift and coming back in after Jim at one point. In the winter, of course, it was off the air at 4:45.

FWIW, I believe I did the 2nd ever overnight shift on 1110 around Dec 85/Jan 86. IIRC, Chuck and Jim did the historic first one together. Don't believe the signal could get off the block. LOL. Of course, I don't think it was even legal at the time.

Ron St. Pierre did work for WHIM at one point, back when it was co-owned with HJY. In this period, I believe Sherm Strickhouser did mornings, Ron middays and Jim afternoon drive.

The Incredible Broadcast Buggy....LOL. Had to careful where you parked that thing, cuz at one time the records were spun on location, too. And if you were in direct sunlight, the suckers would warp right on the air.

Ron did work at WHIM. I check those WPRO blogs and he had something up there about being on air during the blizzard of 78 with Jim O'Brien. Didn't Amy Hagan work at WHIM too before she started using the other parking lot?

I think that everyone in Rhode Island radio worked for WHIM, at one time, or another.

"The Incredible Broadcast Buggy"
Wow does that bring back memories... LOL
I had the honor to haul the buggy around when I was there.
I remember forgetting to secure it down at the Indian Ranch .while it starts to roll down the hill in the pouring rain.

Does anyone remember when WHIM was 94 FM in the 70's? Didn't they have a overnight or was it still a Daytimer.. ?
Did Dan Williams work the overnight at that time?

Don't know about overnights, but I do remember (since my parents used to listen to the FM, all the time) that Lee Frazier was on at night, and Arthur Godfrey (not the same one), also worked there. I had a chance to work with Arthur, years later, at WLKW-FM. WHIM 94.1 also had some pretty snazzy jingles, in the day. Of course, I was probably about 13 or 14 years old, back in the early 70's, so it's all a bit foggy.

Hi Mark...
That was the same jingle package we had when we were there. ( I have a copy of that) The Country Giant Package..
I think there was another package around 1976, That's were the "Country and Proud of it" came from
Thats why the buggy was Red White and Blue...

Danny Williams did work at WHIM a couple of times with a bout doing radio in Nashville in between I believe.
And let's not forget the late great Pappy. I'm too young to have remembered him on the air, but he later was engineer at WHJJ/WHJY but on some sort of retainer to do work at WHIM when needed (which was always). Being old-line country you could just see the look of disgust on his face when he walked in the studio & Bob Seger was playing.

Yes, good ole Pappy...someone had to keep those two turntables running...those were certainly the days. If I close my eyes, I can hear the cue scratches again, like it was just yesterday :D.

Some voices I remember from over the years at WHIM country are Paul Peyton, Tony Potter, Norm Laramie, Gene Barner, Mark Wayne, Big John Allen, Tom Allen, Bill Goodman, Andy Jackson, Paul Daley, Kevin McCord, Dan Williams, Jim O'Brien, Sherm Strickhouser, Lee Frazier, Sam Bass, Pappy Philbrook, Ron St.Pierre, Iron Mike Bessette, J.J. Shannon, Jeff Davis, Charlie Huddle, Vin Greco, Mark Ambrose, Paul MacArthur, Paul Vincent, Bob Chase, Bill Friday. I remember Frank Colletta doing news for awhile when they had something called "20/20 news". Captain Jack with traffic and a guy named Wally Saleeba did sports in the 70's. Great Station, I loved those "Country Giant" jingles. I have often wondered what might have been if they had kept 94.1 country and changed the 1110 format to something else. Back then I know AM was bigger than FM and beautiful music was the big thing on WLKW 101.5 so I guess it was a logical move at the time to flip the FM side to "Joy".
