The Phenomonon of Lite 100.5 always ending up #1 12+....UGH!

What makes Lite 100.5 WRCH so special? I believe and correct me if I am wrong but RCH has been #1 12+ for at least 10 ratings books. And this last book they got a 12.3 and I think TIC AM got a 7. That is a big difference!
How does Allan Camp and the CBS Radio team do it? I think their play list is only
500 songs? But they test well with women 25-54. Guess that's it! Anyone else with an idea?

Dosen't WRCH Sand for White Rich Connecticut Housewifes?

Wait a minute, the playlist is OVER 9000!!!!! (er, sorry, current pop culture reference - look it up)

[Take 2] Wait a minute, the playlist is over 500 songs? aren't most stations these days under 400?

WRCH would be good calls for a hit music station. It just came to me while looking at the calls.

W - We
R - Are
C - Connecticut's
H - Hit Music Station

Just goes to show you how habitual CT radio listeners are. Let's see you have a business office say at a Htfd insurance company and person a) likes 92.5, Person b) 95.7 person c) 96.5 (Marconi on the other side of the grass only knows why????) and d) 93.7 none of you win......it's e) none of the above it's blite 100.5.....cause it's the station everyone agrees to compromise on. It's defies programming logic how this station kicks ass in the Hartford metro. Especially coming out of a top of the hour id with "You've got a friend" by JT
I actually heard Nickeback's "Far Away" on that station. That was a shocker!    What's next maybe a Finger Eleven tune???? ::)

As opposed to what? "I Can't Help Myself"? "Do You Believe in Love"? "Uptown Girl"? Do listeners really care whether the top-of-the-hour song is uptempo? I know "You've got to have high energy out of the ID" has been a radio bromide for eons, but hasn't it only applied to rockers, CHRs and oldies stations, not listen-at-work ACs?

Also, where are the 102.9 listeners at this hypothetical insurance office? Did they all retire?

It appears that even 102.9 listeners are not as tranquil as RCH people. I guess it's a station everyone agrees on in the office????? And they continue to get ratings. When I was there for a short sales stint a few years ago, the Sales Mgr coined it as "The Cadillac Of Lite Stations". Will any station ever knock Lite off it's perch? I thought years ago Magic 104 had a shot but no cigar.

How would a station do that? Forget about going country or rock or urban; they'd only hurt 92.5, 106.9 and 93.7 and wouldn't affect 100.5 at all. Broaden the playlist? WRCH listeners (and the office managers who set the radio) want pleasant background music with no surprises -- "songs you love by artists you know," as I once heard as an AC station's positioner. Adding a dozen new songs a week, rotating evergreens in and out of the playlist from month to month, digging deep for "oh wow" oldies ... that's not what the office crowd wants from its listen-at-work station.

WRCH isn't my favorite station, but I've got to admit they do a great job of serving their target demographic. Just about every song is ultra-familiar, and the few new songs they add quickly become familiar. There's enough uptempo material to keep everyone from dozing off. And, most important, the listener can easily concentrate on his/her work/household chores/driving with WRCH on. Just think of WRCH as the evolution of the "beautiful music" stations of 30-40 years ago: Would you be thinking of challenging such a station's dominance with more songs or expanded genres?

One person's "predictable" is another person's "consistent." People in the business or a small minority of very attentive listeners often see predictability as the reason radio is declining. Many jobs may be gone, but radio's not going away tomorrow. Consistency gives the overwhelming majority of listeners a clear image of what they can expect to hear - and not hear - on a station. It worked with Bob Steele for decades. It worked with the Drake Top 40 format. Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh and Lite FM all have a consistency. Like them or not, that consistency has earned them a profitable niche in their markets. The stations that have constant changes in format or even dial position are the ones that struggle. Lite 100.5 may not be aiming at your demographic, but if you're a 25-54 (probably 35+) woman they're right up your alley.

After all the years 100.5 has been a lite station you would think some programming guru would have figured out how to knock this station down?
There is nothing special about the station. Boring put you to sleep personalities and typical music rotation. CT listeners are habitual. You take that station and put in a city in California and it will be a whole different ball game.
