THE PORTLAND RADIO MARKET ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Compared to Seattle, where I used to work, Portland is tremendous. The AC and HOT/AC stations in Seattle are lame musically and promotionally compared to the AC and HOT/AC in Portland. Charlie is better than JACK, same with Classic Hits Same is true on the CHR side of the dial. Z-100 smokes KBKS. MOVIN in Seattle has declined too. On the AM band KEX and KXL are news operations with real personality in this ladies view, though I am not a big AM listener. I also find the postings on the Oregon thread of radio-info more informative and less dull. There are fewer posts and less crap. I tried to post on the Seattle board for about a year, but ended up getting bashed or linked to idiot posters. I quit Seattle radio, have made my last post on the Seattle boards and LOVE it in Portland. The city is nicer too, downtown is much better, you have light rail and the restaurants here are better than Seattle's. Portland is a big city with a small town feel, whether shopping at Washington Square, walking through downtown shopping, OMSI, even the suburbs have more character. I love being able to drive 40 miles to the Wineries outside of McMinnville. Portland is hardly ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Try living up north and you'll see what a great town it is. Mt Hood is AWESOME, snowboarding is a hell of a lot better that what you find outside of Seattle. Anyone else come Seattle and find this market actually more interesting?

As far as format 'offerings', Portland isn't too bad. The stations themselves tend to sound a little bland, but overall, this isn't a bad market. I've been living here my entire life too. If I had to compare it to Seattle, I'd say Portland is better.

Portland radio has "come up" a little bit in rcent years, but now with the death of KISN (G****D******* talk stations......) and with the arrival of the horrendous waste of specrtum known as "Movin'" it seems to have worked its way back into a slump, as far as usage of my wireless is concerned.

Having lived in Portland for something like 23 of my 23 years, I have to say otherwise--I think Seattle is a far more interesting market, but then again that's probably because I only go up there every coupla years and I have been listening to (read: "trying hard to ignore") Portland radio day in and day out. Same old bland, satellite-fed crap, different day. And when going to Seattle I never leave home without my SCA rig!!

I will say one thing tho--the BMX riding here is WAY better than Seattle. (This from experience.) Also the IMAX Dome at OMSI is killer, if not a little expensive............

However, if anyone in this area has a TV set with a SAP channel (or a suitably-modded FM/TV radio), tune it to channel 10 (or whatever your local OPB affiliate is) switch on the SAP and you can hear what I listen to on my radio in the truck on my way to work. Reason: I don't subscribe to a print newspaper........and it is kind of dangerous to read a newspaper and drive..............

It just comes down to a matter of opinion. As a 27 year resident of Portland, I find this market to be more interesting than Seattle. I go up to Seattle several times a year to visit family, and it is nice to hear radio in a different market, but when I closely look at both markets (Portland and Seattle), I find it safe to say that Portland is a better radio market. That's just my opinion of course.

What I do like about Seattle is KISW (excellent rock station), I enjoy it more than KUFO. And I do enjoy KBSG. Great oldies station. Musically, I prefer it over K-Hits, but I'm still glad to have K-Hits around.

As for the AC's I prefer K103 over Warm 106.9 in Seattle.

Those are just a few market comparisons.

I guess it is because I am young and [hyper]active and have a seemingly instaiable desire to roam........see the text on the bottom of my post for an idea. I have lived in PDX for pretty much my entire life and I jump at the chance to get away from town when ever possible. (I am not sure if I ever mentioned it, but I usually seem to land in Manzanita or Pendleton---probably 80% of the time it's PDT--for sometimes a week at a time.)

That "lived in Portland for pretty much my entire life" doesn't take into account the fact that I lived in Victoria all of 2000 and half of 2001.

(Hey.....you want some interesting and sometimes just...strange radio? Grab an AM/Fm rig and hightail it up to Victoria sometimes, or even Vancouver [BC] which really isn't that much different!! ;o)

K-Hits is OK, I guess, for a while. Acceptible sub for lack of KISN (R.I.P.) for the time being. But as far as I can tell in the forseeable future (also factoring in the general state/chi of radio in our market) KH likely will never be able to do what KISN could do!!

But there IS always KBOO!!

While not as good as KISN, it is still nice to have K-Hits around. Better than the former adult contemporary format.

Another Portland and Seattle comparison to make, I believe Jack FM in Seattle is better programmed than Charlie FM here in Portland.

Hmm, maybe I'm beginning to contradict my original post. Maybe Seattle is a better market! LOL

I'll have to think about this. ::)

Perhaps I'm just getting tired of the Portland radio landscape.

Yes I had heard several talk about how they liked Charlie. So I listened. Much like KHITS, the music was fun to hear, however it was pretty humiliating to hear the mid-day female talent say she got to "go on the air" at random times during the day, whenever her boss said it was "OK"! So I suppose she's the traffic girl who wishes she was a DJ, so they let her do it once a day????

THAT must really save some bucks, but probably not too great for the ratings!!!

Sure did sound like Po-Dunk radio to me.
