The Ratings for AC WJXA Nashville Are Amazing!

92.9 WJXA, the AC station in Nashville, has numbers that are almost double of the #2 station on the list, iHeart Country WSIX-FM. We usually see Mix 92.9 in double digits during the holidays. But now it's double digits in July. WJXA is among the highest rated radio stations in a Top 50 market.

It's interesting that it runs "John Tesh Intelligence for Your Life" overnight. It still has a local show in evenings, something most AC stations no longer do.

The local show is for two reasons: 1. Midwest Communications dropped Delilah here to cost cut. 2. Not far away in Cookeville is Lite Rock 95.9, so part of the Nashville market still gets Delilah.

But how does MWC explain Jack? Below K-Love & 92Q? Ok, K-L has bested them before... but has 92Q?
P.S. Has there been a reasonable explanation why no one has taken on the pretty consistently #1 rated station? For decades.

I thought it was Midwest's predecessor, South Central, that cut Delilah. Unless this has changed, she's 100% barter. The schedule used to be three minutes an hour during her show plus barter spots from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. I can't remember how many of her spots my station used to have to run outside of her show, but I distinctly remember three four minute breaks an hour with the first minute of each going to her. I was usually the guy my former employer brought in to board-op the show when the automation went down, which wasn't frequently but wasn't exactly rare either.

PPM, however, was absolutely brutal to her. She was never the goddess BP/Jones and Premiere made her out to be. Looking at her numbers, she always rode your ratings more than she brought new listeners, but a free show that didn't hurt you in a timeslot that was tough to sell was hard to beat, especially if you were a small market station. PPM, though, exposed how little time people actually spent listening to her. I'm not sure how many major and large markets she's in these days, but I know she's lost a lot of them, and most stations that carry her in those markets are iHeart operations.

For a while, Delilah's formula of people weeping about their lost loves or deceased pets was thought to appeal to an audience that was too old. But now, stations don't want to pay a salary for evenings, so she's been added to many AC outlets. And of course, since her show is syndicated by Premiere, nearly all iHeart AC stations carry her.

I think John Tesh "Intelligence for Your Life" is a better show. But if AC stations don't want to pay for evening DJs anymore, I'd rather they run Delilah or Tesh instead of just stringing along songs, spots and promos from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Probably also helps that she doesn't play "Wind Beneath My Wings" or "My Heart Will Go On" anymore.

With the numbers WJXA pulls, running barter spots that take up slots that could be sold by the station to clients at a premium probably doesn't make sense. It costs less to have a local host when you can sell those 3 minutes an hour, plus whatever ROS spots would be required, for much more value than just handing your inventory off to Premiere. Not only that, but the local host brings more value to the radio station than Delilah would.

I applaud the fact that Mix made this investment and hope everyone here reading this does as well. Midwest Communications is a good company and WJXA is one of the finest AC stations in the nation.

She still seems to fare reasonably well in diary markets. Her biggest problem would seem to have been that people just didn’t stick around for long when she was on-air.

iHeart has a reformulated show for larger markets that has had varying degrees of success. I'm not sure which iHeart stations are carrying her today, but, last I'd heard, she wasn’t carried in every PPM market where iHeart has an AC. She's carried in most of the diary markets, but, unless it has changed recently, she's not on KQXT in San Antonio for one.

I think John Tesh "Intelligence for Your Life" is a better show.

I would agree with that. Having said that, neither of us is in the target audience of an AC. I also don’t really like Tesh much either. Simply being better than Delilah to me is an extremely low bar to clear.

I'd disagree with you here. I'd rather hear music, spots, and ID's over either of them. I'd rather hear almost anything over Delilah. I can't stomach her. I'd rather hear that annoying Jardiance commercial on repeat than hear Delilah, though, if any station were airing that, I'd change the station, too!

I can’t imagine an extra three minutes an hour after 6:00 PM would make a huge difference in terms of revenue. That time is really hard to sell, even if you’re the lead station in demo. The spots during the daytime might make a difference, though, depending on their rates. Working at a top two 25-54 female station roughly twenty years ago, most of the spots we aired after 10:00 PM were bonus or barter spots. We had a few clients who just couldn’t afford our regular rates and bought after hours, but the majority of our inventory was either barter, bonus, or the owners advertising their other businesses.

I hope it has been successful for Mix, too. Like you, I like to see owners investing in their stations. I'd also like it if Midwest replaced Delilah with Deanna on its other AC's. I've said before that I wouldn’t be posting here if I had the answer to radio's woes, but I can’t imagine it's being a less good version of Apple Music and Spotify.

Not to mention, Mix is paired with the wildly successful adult hits (bordering more on classic hits) 96.3 Jack FM WCJK. Midwest has a very strong duo in those two. I’m not familiar enough with 106.7’s performance to say, but 92.9 and 96.3 are VERY strong.

At one time, most stations took all of Delilah, including letting her show choose the music. I remember it was something mentioned in the press release when WLTW began carrying Delilah, the first syndicated show on a station that had been live and local 24/7. But management announced it would run Lite-FM's own music when airing her program. These days, all but the most shoestring operations take a few minutes to insert their own playlist into her show. In fact, she no longer announces any songs or tries to play a song appropriate for whatever the caller just said.

There's still a version with music if you want it but only small stations take that option. I'm not sure if Tesh even offers a version with music. It's possible he just gives you his commentary and you schedule it between your songs.

-----------

Which iHeart AC and Soft AC stations take Delilah and which don't?

--WLTW NYC, WLIT Chicago, KDGE Dallas, KISQ San Francisco, KODA Houston and WASH Washington run Delilah.

--KOST Los Angeles, WNIC Detroit, KQXT San Antonio and WMGF Orlando have their own local shows.

Delilah runs on WSRW Grand Rapids MI and WRVF Toledo OH as well.
