the relevance of a "voiceguy" for a morning show

By "voiceguy" I mean someone to do phone bits with, as a celebrity character or not. Are they relevant any more? I'd be particularly interested in what you PD's have to say. If you had the opportunity to grab someone who is the best you've ever heard, would you? And how much would that be worth to your station each month?

An acquaintance of mine (an actor) is the best character voice I have ever heard in my almost 40 years in the business, and he's already a star in the viral video world. I'm not going to drop his name here, and I'm not posting this to drum up business. I'm just doing him a favor.

In my PD days, voiceguys (used right) would be a nice asset for a morning show. How about today? do they matter? Are budgets so tight that they're not used today?

If he is good, he is worth his weight in gold...BUT, by being good, I don't just mean the ability to do "voices" but to be creative, day in and day out, to not just perform but also WRITE outstanding comedy day in and day out. Then and ONLY then is the guy worth a paycheck.

I totally agree with that statement. Its a waste of money if he can ONLY do voices. If he can write bits or atleast work with the morning show to get bits on-air... then snag him. However, most markets...at least mine...claim to not have the money for things like that. So, it must be nice. I do the voices on my show. However, I also find myself coming up with and producing the bits myself. Which, simply might be an OCD thing of mine. But thats usually how it works. But, as long as the other two bring 100 percent in every other part of the show. I am cool.
